Thought I would put new brakes in my 190 as the adjustment is at the end.   Tore it apart and I see band brakes plus a disc unit.

I can see how the band gets tightened by stepping on the brakes.   What causes the disc to get expanded to brake...just the braking action causes the unit to expand horizontally??

Wow...what a design.

They are self energizing brakes. The bands energize the discs by cause rotation which causes the steel balls to roll up the ramps which pushes the discs. They work pretty good until they where enough so that want to lock up on you. IMO better than the IH 806 design but not as good as the 4020 or later Allis 7000 series design.

I'm thinking the Bendix Corporation invented these "combination band and disc" brakes, or if A-C invented them, they hired Bendix to build them for A-C. D-19's were the first and then the Series 3 D-17's were next.  The exact same brake is used in New Idea Uni-Harvesters and in some models of Gleaner combines.

I know that most of the brake bands all have Bendix on them, for sure. Rick
