Well,,I couldn't sleep, so I started checking some FB marketplace ads and come across what looks like a misprint,,,or a scam....Post says 1940's Massey Ferguson tractor. Needs new engine. I mean the price is so dang cheap even ole Shameless would of jumped all over it.

 It was bout 3 am but I figured ,,,what the heck, so I shot em a message for more info. Long bout 7:30 they respond and give me a phone number. I call and the sweetest sounding young thing breathes into my ear that they got my message, gives me an address and tells me,,,,,,,Ya better bring your money and trailer Quick cause they is 11 other dudes hot on the trail of this tractor,,,,,,,I ask her to name the price and she breathes the same price as listed, so I tell her I'll be there in a pair of minutes. 24 minutes later I drive up to their house and there are 2 other dudes with trailers waitin to see what I'm gonna do since I was first caller. That right there is one  honest girl as one of the other AH's offers her twice what I'm fixin to pay,,so I flip him off twice for good measure and start loading it up. The girl's husband or BF walks up and helps load it and in 15 minutes I've got it boomed down, payed her off ,, kissed both of them on the cjheek and headed home,,,,,,, The girl tells me it was her Grandpa's tractor and the throttle got stuck wide open and threw #4 rod before he could close the throttle. The tin is in GREAT shape and overall tractor is very clean. Rears are decent but fronts are ruined from settin flat.  I'm almost embarrassed to name the price, but easily worth 5 times what I gave em,,,,,more when i get it running,,,

 Hey Pat,, how do I tell if it has "differential lock"?  It does have a working 3 point and PTO according to the girl. By the way,,,,she texted me last night and asked if I might be interested in the implements her Grandpa had for the tractor,,,,I said HECK YEA,,,, ( I'm gettin to like her more and more,,,think she remembers the kiss on da cheek)

Looks like it has a 9N front axle.

  Hey Creston,,,, since you is the forum Guru on them little Ford class tractors,,,hav you ever heard or read where others have swapped in other engines into a Massey like this one,,,??? I think it was ole Thad that said this was prolly a Continental built engine. I'ma gonna post some other pics so maybe ya'll can tell more what I really got. 

The big improvement over a ferd is it has an overhead valve engine and I think 4 speeds forward.  Not Allis but a cousin!

BTW,. it looks like one of those rare air cooled models...

I may be wrong but I seem to remember the operator pushed in the clutch and then moved the shift lever to the S cast into the trans cover.  Doing that would engage the starter.  So I think the 5 is actually an S.

Also I think the original color was a very dark green on the main tractor with gray sheet metal, anyone know for sure?  Seems like most of them got repainted Massey Red for some reason.

Oh, and the TO meant it was built in North America, a TE was built in England.

This is gettin better and better and for what I paid for it, I felt kinda cheap, (Ya listenin, Shameless?) so ,,I whip out a $5,,,,,,, and think better of it,,,and give her a $50,,,,,there I feel better now,,,, She promises she will hunt for the intake manifold and "give" it to me,,,,is this Minerva or what,,,,???

 

  Well,,Thad,,I just KNEW ole Shameless was gonna wanna make me pay for that little slip on "The Deal Of The Month",,,,and,,,,and,,,maybe even the deal of the ,,,,,,YEAR,,,yes,,!!

 Ya see,,,,the only'ist thing I gots missin now is the intake and maybe the radiator, but Ms Granpa's Tractor has assurred me she will bring  em to me soon. 

 I been moving stuff around to where I can roll it off the trailer and under my favorite shade tree to begin the project,,,,,, 

  Do you happen to know what the metallurgy is on the block? I'm gonna have to weld up the air condition port on the right side of the block. From what I can see, it is just in the crankcase and not in the cooing water.

  I don't know,,,,I might of shot myself in the foot by steal,,,er,,,by buyin this Massey before goin and gettin ole Shameless's tractor,,,so don't YOU go doin the same thing and forfitting your Jeep,,,,,,,

 I check him out on Google Earth every so often and see him on the back porch and them filngs just flyin out,,,him sharpenin his poker'er stick,,,and,,,and,,you can't miss thet evil lookin grin on his face,,,,,,,

 Well,,I do gots a bit of an update,,,but I got to plead like ole Shameless SO I gots no pics as I just cannot seem to get the hang of my new IPhone to transfer pics to the PC for Chit,,!!

 Anyway,,,with some very good help from ole LeonR2013,,,i finally got all my chit together and got the donor patch welded in on the block where the #4 rod cap came out the block. I used the Nickel 55 rod and I'll tell youse Guys,,that is some great rod for cast iron as it flows like butter and adhears to the parent metal better than any other cast iron rod I've ever used,,,Many Thanks,,Leon,,,!!! I used up all but one rod out of a 1# tube and only had two little bitty seeps with the diesel test. I'm gonna gouge em out tamarrow and fill em up and redo the Diesel  test and I'll bet they will not leak no more.

 I got a set of sleeves and pistons and will start the re-assembly when I get a question resolved, so here goes.

 When the #4 rod cap let go,,it also broke a small piece of the block at the very bottom of the #4 liner location. Right now there is only enough meat for ONE of the TWO sealing O-Rings on the liner. Ya'll thinkONE O-Ring would be enough?? I seriously don't think that could be fixed by welding but am thinking bout using some BELZONA or maybe even JB Weld and use the old liner as a "mold" and build the Belzona up to the block,,???? The broke piece is bout 1" wide X 1/2" high.  Any thoughts on this,,??

I don't think that Cheby engine will fit in a Fergi...

 OK,,A bit of an update on the little Massey.

 I HAVE A GOOD BLOCK,,,,!!!!!  Yep,,Yep,,,after a good amount of Nickel 55 weld rod, 13 grinder discs and some cussin and more cussing,,,,,I finally can say this block is ready for some re-assembly and put a spark in it,,,,,Yea,,!! I gouged out the three seep areas and rewelded and then had one other seep but finally can say there are NO Leaks from this area,,!!

 On the chunk  of the block broke out of the very bottom of the liner area,,here's how I fixed it,,,and NO LAUGHING,,,,, I took the old liner,  cleaned both O-Ring grooves and then ground the grooves a little bit deeper and wider. Mixed up some JB Weld and filled the grooves with this JB Weld,,,,,let it set up and chucked the liner in the lathe and machined the excess filler off the liner. 

  Tamarrow, I'm gonna wrap some foil around the area where the O-Rings go, Very carefully set the liner in the block, then fill the broke out area with hi temp JB Weld,,alowing the foil / liner  to be a "form" so to speak,,,,, With any luck,,the JB Weld should set on the foil / liner and provide "area" for the second O-Ring. Only'ist problem might be getting the liner back out if the foil doesn't provide a good "form"?

 What Ya'll think bout my shade tree repairs,,,,,??? Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do,,,,,,,,

Well,,,Shameless,,,as a fact of the matter,,,I HAVE been eating them Mulberrys this year as I read where any of the darker color fruit is the one that  has most of the medicinal  goody,,,,I know the ants, the flies and the Mocking birds can't all be wrong,,,,and,,,,and,,,if you can't beat em you just as well join em,,,,Chit,, my Momma didn't raise no fools,,,,,,

 They was just bout gone and the last storm we had,,, pretty much knocked most of em off the tree,,,,,,

 NOW for all the DANG clean up of back yard,,,,,,

 Well,,,,Fellars,,,I lucked out,,,I DID,,!! The shade tree repairs I did to the Massey block in the area where the ORings for the liners go,,look to have been good,,,,,, I had a bit of an issue getting the liner out of the block this mornin,,,then the foil had stuck to the JB Weld and after some careful peeling off the foil,,,,Presto,,,!!! the JB looks to be part of the block with nary a visible defect,,cannot feel any line where the two metals join,,

 Since I'm now past this biggest hurdle,,I'm gonna start the re-assembly and see what this mofo sounds like,,,chit,,I still ain't fount me a manifold,,,maybe I'll send ole Les some money to go get the one on ole Shameless's TO35,,,'sides,,,, he ain't using it,,,,

 It's a relief,,now I know the block ain't junk,,at least for now,,,,

 Yeah,,Shameless,,I've read a lot bout the JB Weld,,6 of them bad and a half dozen all good,,,But when you read the specs for the stuff,,,it is pretty impressive,,! Now the naysayers must of used the lower quality JB as there are sevgeral "grades" of JB but most places like Walmart only carry the cheeper grade but the really GOOD stuff is available on line from the bigger distributors. The JB at walmart was only 550° capability but the stuff I ordered was 1200° and if thet little ole massey ever sees them kind of temps,,,they ain't anything else gonna stay together,,,,,

 I used my 4 1/2" grinder on this material this mornin and it is HARD as the parent metal,,,I was gonna dress down the excess on the liner repair but CHIT ain't nobody gonna be lookin inside the engine,,,,,,

 For years the place I used to work at used the high priced Belzona with great success but it was not the better grade and seems like it was only 700°,,,The really, really expensive Belzona was  even better buy like I said,,,very expensive,,you could almost go buy a new pump case for what you paid for the repairs,,,,,

  Chit,,Shameless,,,you one step ahead of most people,,, but,,,,,,not me,,,!! Ya see,,,my imagination is limited only by not having seen what the original manifold looked like but,,,,,but,,,I been skechin up my own design for buildin one,,!!! Yes Sir,,,!! just need 4 pieces of 1 1/4" tubing for the intake and,,,and  just 4 more pieces of same size  tubing for them headers I gonna build,,weld it all up and Presto,,,instant intake/exhaust manifold,,,,,!!! 

 Fact is,,,You 'member thet Geo 3 cylinder I been wantin to put in my Kawasaki Mule,,,,,?? Well,,with ole Fixer's help,,I finally figured out how to put a spark in the Geo engine and got it to run even without a manifold AT ALL,,,,!!! just gotta keep sprayin some WD40 into the intake ports after it starts,,,,course you gotta stay out of the way of the exhaust ports blowin straight at you,,,,, I just bout got That intake manifold built but ain't yet decided whether to put a Harley Screaming Eagle carb or a single barrel carb from am early )gasp) Ford 

 Just wished I had a small mill tho,,,,,,,,

 OH,,,and Chask,,,,,by the time I get done with this thing,,,,you ain't ever gonna know it ever been touched,,,,,  Ya see,,after the JB repairs had bout 48 hours to set up good and hard,,,I ground thet stuff down nice and level,,,then used some Bondo and filled in the rough edges,,,run the needle gun all over everything for that "cast" look and Presto,,,,Brand new block,,,,,!!! Motto here is " Don't ask,,Don't tell" 

 What you think bout them apples,,,,???
