I bought a 2300 disc last summer. It had 5 broken coulters and a bad bearing. The the bearing was on the end easy to get to and fix.
What gets me is that the disc was still being used with a bad bearing. I took it apart yesterday and found that both of the bearing races were gone, bearing carriers worn in half, gang bolt worn halfway through and both spools next to the bearing worn down to beyond use.
What I don’t understand is why not stop and replace a $25.00 bearing. Not only is it cheaper to fix but also the disc would have been worth more.
I guess I just don’t get it.

Dennis, may I ask where the disc was bought: local farmer, Craigslist,Auction time/Big Iron etc.? Just wondering if the disc was pulled with a cabbed tractor. I have often wondered about the ability to hear a faulty bearing while being in a climate controlled cab. We run cabless  100 series ourselves(180 and XT 190).I personally have been able to catch several bearing fails on the disc and cultimulcher due to just being able to listen/hear what's going on behind me.I am aware that routine greasing of the gang bearings(unless they are a sealed unit,I am not familiar with an Allis disc) should have been discovered and repaired. Best of luck and have a safe planting season.

My siblings and I have to give our parents credit for being taught the proper way to use and take care of equipment from a basic lawn mower to a combine. It turns my stomach to see some of the abuse and misuse things get. Our last new tractor to our farm is 22 years old and still has plastic from the factory on the seat. If the plastic gives out we will cover it with a proper color towel. Some folks buy combines worth a half million dollars and they never see the inside of a shed. Crazy. Ryan

Your should see the 6080 I’m working on. Holes rusted in the platform, all but 1 light not working, yoke welded on the driveshaft, diesel running out of the injector pump, oil in front axle BLACK, brake reservoir busted off, air cleaner from 2003, alternator packed full of clay, rim poorly patched and the list goes on and on.

Local farmer, the disc is 10’ wide and I don’t know what he pulled it with.

I saw a you tube video recently with a operator pulling maybe a 20' disc with several discs broke in half and those two gangs not even turning, just dragging stalks. I expected to read some interesting comments but not a word. ?????

Sounds like mine. I have one too that uses the unobtanium Bal-Pak bearings. Two of them were in similar shape worn clear through the outer shell. I did get lucky and find a couple NOS bearings from up in Canada and made a new friend in the process. I was able to use the rebuild procedure and replace the bearings on two of the other gangs so 3 out of the 4 have all new bearings now.

Couldnt help but  bereminded of  my Mom covering up all the furniture with drapes so as to protect the fabric ...said fabric which matches the decor but you would never know it since it is covered...

I think this is key......sometimes (but not always) the discount on beat up stuff can
be way more than the cost to repair the abused equipment.
I guess anyone buying something has to make a conscious decision
on how much to pay.

This is not an excuse for abusing machinery....just the way things are in
the real world.

I try to be that way all the time, keeping things clean and doing preventive maintenance. 
I'll add a note about keeping the cabs clean. I've seen several farmers' tractor cabs so full of tools and other garbage that you can't even see the floor. I blow my cab out with compressed air nearly every day I'm in the field, then wipe everything off with a damp rag if there's any dust left.

I just came back from hauling a 2010 F150 to the scrapyard. It drove here Friday, pulled engine/tranny, rear springs and hood. It had NEVER been oil sprayed. Oh yeah, kept the BRAND NEW rotors too.
It had to be at LEAST $50K 8 years ago ??

Not good enough in the end. I could have bought the 6070 with loader that was advertised on here for the same money once you added in all the repairs.

must be  a crazy Canuck term

oil sprayed = rust proofing
any process of getting oil or wax or slippery slime onto as much metal as possible.
old days we'd use a 1/2 cut down brush and old engine oil, then drive down gravel roads for an hour. THAT's kinda frowne dupon now...

I have 40 bottoms waiting for me to get cleaned up. They’ll get done in time. Wish we had some sandy clay around here. That would cleanup a bottom really fast.
