1949 WD original 201 engine. Attempting rear main seal installation. seems no matter how I try, end up with about 3/16ths" protruding that won't squeeze down but "mushrooms" over when I attempt to slowly snug up main cap. Engine is out on stand for complete rebuild. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated. Have installed many "rope type" seals as I have been a mechanic for 40+ yrs, but this one has me baffled. Seal appears to have a plastic [rubber?] piece sandwiched between 2 layes of felt.

Did you watch Don Bradley's video on the rear seal. Might help. I think Don compresses the rear seal a little prior to installation. He has several other tips and tricks too. But basically dont cut anything is his moto. Having it out and upside right is going to help you get it done correctly too!

First, use 3M glue to glue them in. Use the F gaskets, tighten cap and continue with assembly.        MACk

Put a little bit of the glue you're using in the groove first, then squeeze the seal lightly in a vise and quickly press it in the groove. The felt should expand back out to fit the groove and stay in place. If the ends are protruding out and mushrooming you don't have the middle of the seal pushed all the way down into the groove. It is difficult and a very tight fit.

Some of the kits I have got have two types of seals in plain felt and the sandwich type with the plastic in, the felt only go in the WD the ones with the plastic in go in the 170 the way I understand never been in the later model 226 so cant say for sure

thin felt is for wd and wd45 thick one is for d17 and up or all late 226 engines

Thanks to all the replies. I ordered a felpro seal which comes with the F gaskets. I have watched Don Bradley's video. I compressed the seals between 2 pieces of flat steel overnight. I believe the seals would have fit had I not made several incorrect attempts to install them & slightly deformed them.  I will watch Don from MO.'s video & see if I can get the new seals installed. Again thanks for all the help. This is a total ground up restore so I want things to be as perfect as possible. [Dad bought this WD new in 1949]

Don't you hate it when you think you know what you're doing but you don't. Dad always did this operation and I was paying much attention. He's gone so it's my turn. I learned here that you glue the felt in. I didn't. ..the first time LOL. Afterward I kinda remembered dad with the 3M glue.

Welcome, and we need some pictures as you progress! I will have to review this when I do a engine this spring too.

REAR MAIN SEAL WOE SOLVED.    New fel pro rear main seal arrived.  Much better fit. Old one was way too big. Came in overhaul kit but maybe wrong seal? poor manufacturing?  Seal squeezed in cap & upper housing nicely. Used weatherstrip adhesive as suggested [3M] Thanks so much for all the help & suggestions. I will post a picture of the 2 seals side by side.Clap

I'm thinking your gasket set might be for the newer 226 engines like in D17/170/175 tractors used and if that's what happened you might recheck the "F" gaskets and front/back pan gaskets for the right fit too. I'm just thinking out loud because I have found a gasket set that's not for WC to 175 tractors.
