HI every one, my name is Jason and I'm new to the forum, so let me know if I'm doing something wrong. Anyways, I'm having problems with the shifter on my G that I wish I didn't buy. As I drive it the transmission pops out of gear and the shifter needs to be pulled and put back in to shift again. No bang or anything when it pops out of gear, just rolls to a stop. I discovered that the lower section of the shifter below the ball has been welded back on! Between the snap ring and the retainer on the shifter there are a couple home made washers from shim stock, these are not in the parts manual. Before I start splitting this thing what am I looking for? I guess I'll pull the side cover first but not sure what I'm looking for and wonder if I can tell how worn parts are without seeing new ones? I also have a parts G I might yank the shifter out of. But the parts G's side cover was split in half when I got it so who knows what is good on that thing. |

Welcome to the Forum! The G is a nifty little tractor - bet you'll really enjoy is once you solve the tranny problem. There are guys on here who have lots of experience with the G - and with the B-C tranny, so I am sure there'll be some expert advice coming soon. That said, that shifter looks like it's had a really hard life! I suspect that replacing it will go a long way to solving your issue. Good luck! ------------- WC, CA, D14, WD45 |

Looks like someone worked it over pretty good. Like Dave said the G uses the Tranny as the B & C. So good used parts are plentiful and inexpensive. Hopefully someone can post a picture of non-worn parts for you. We have a G and it’s a great little tractor. You will enjoy it! Just don’t give up on it. ------------- Thanks & God Bless Dennis |

Thanks for the welcome guys! I figured this was the place to ask. Ya I knew hey were the same transmission, my friend has a B that's when I noticed. Not sure how much is interchangeable though, the shifter and the side cover with the forks are different. I've had the parts G for 4 years and intend to rebuild it one day. Got this G in September. That would be great if someone has pics of good parts or a good repair manual. I have the parts, operators and service manuals for it but the service one is fairly unreadable. I'm not gonna give up on it, I love G''s! I'm mostly hoping to figure out what's wrong with it before I dismantle it. |

Replace shifter. The casting where the shifter seats may be worn also. That being said it shouldn’t jump out of gear unless the fork isn’t being moved all the way in to the detent or the detent is worn or broken/missing spring. ------------- Thanks & God Bless Dennis |

Thanks Gerald J. That manual will be a lot of help. In my copy I literally can't read the part about splitting the machine. Photo copy of a photo copy... Thanks Dennis I wouldn't have thought of that, the area where the shifter sits wearing out. I'm gonna take the fork cover off and look in there first, but I'm gonna split this thing before and after the gearbox. I want to see inside and clean it out the best I can, some super thick, brown oil came out with chunks of ice in it. That was after I dumped in a bunch of kerosene to thin the oil. Also had kerosene pour out the bell housing once I got it near full, hopefully that's just the clutch shafts seal. Thanks for checking out the parts for me! Hopefully I won't need too much haha. |

Do not forget the creeper gear. The B-C transmission is used however, in front of the transmission case there is a housing in which the creeper gear resides. A lot of times the creeper gear will not engage. There is a shiftier rod that is part of the gear shift pattern. More than enough the Shiftier rod gets out of the pattern. Merely move it back into alignment and you will have the full four gear pattern. Also, when I sold them I found it best to "roll" your wrist when shifting. To find reverse I rolled the shifter rod with pressure up. I was feeling for a "bump" in the pattern. When I found it I pulled up. Worked for me. Let me wish you the best for your transmission reconstruction. They are basically a very simple transmission to work with. We sold a lot of G's and only had to replace two transmissions. That was because of an impatient operator who jammed the gears while shifting. When you get finished you will have an excellent tractor. Best plowing tractor I sold. With the proper plow set properly could eat up trash. I was pleased to use Bob Bollinger's G at the last Mid Atlantic Allis Chalmers Club plow day I attended. What an experience for an old Allis Chalmers salesman. Good Luck! Bill Long

Don't worry guys I'll keep ya all updated for sure! Didn't get much done in the time I had today unfortunately. Battery was froze and couldn't start the thing. I want to back it in the shed so I don't lose parts in the snow haha, couldn't push it myself either. Ya Bill Long I've been thinking about the creeper gear. I wonder if I'm engaging the creeper gear instead of first as it was faster in reverse. The shifter wasn't where I think it should be in creeper from pics I've seen. Also couldn't grab third but I wasn't gonna hammer it either, especially with the unknown condition of this machine. Since I wasn't able to move it I at least went all around the thing loosening all the nuts and bolts so I know it'll come apart easy. I don't have a computer and my phone is on the fritz so I might not respond now and then, but I'll be back. Gonna get a new phone this week. Thanks guys!

Hey everyone sorry for the radio silence. What a pita ir is to get a new phone without getting ripped off eh. Anyways I tore the g down good throughout the week. I cant say I know what the issue is exactly but I think it's the shifter. Didn't see anything wrong with the forks or gates on the shifter fork plate. I do see one part on the bracket that's riveted to the plate that I believe is bent but don't believe its causing me an issue. When I had the torque tube off I could see the creeper gear was too far forward for me to ever have engaged it. I bumped it back with a plastic mallet and was able to shift it. When I did I could only get the gear in about half way until the shifter ran out of stroke as it hit the housing. I'm guessing since the bottom of the shifter is messed up it's not fully engaging gears and some how its able to slide in between the two gates. I think I'll get the shifter off the parts g when I can (it's not at my house) and see how it feels in there. My current shifter is floppy as hell when in gear. Also looks like some one used tar as lube in this thing as its nasty. Also looks like someone thought creeper gesr eas a heavy pulling gesr as the small gear is right messed up and the large creeper gear is rough.
