Were spike toothed cylinders ok for grains and red clover, or just more for beans. Thanks!

The only spiker we have is in an L2. Previous owners used it on red clover just fine. We have cut beans and wheat with it, and it did a pretty good job. We had been told they would eat through weedy beans like nothing, but didnt find it that much better than our cylinder bar combines. I have heard that cutting corn with them is a bad idea, but they are supposed to be fine other than that.

Spike cylinders are used mainly for edible beans. I'm sure a spike would work to some degree in anything but corn. After all the old threshing machines all had spike cylinders.

Calvin, I was thinking of that one at Hyde's. It looks like a nice unit. I suppose that you could swap the cylinder out in favour of a rasp bar type. See you on the weekend.

I've used a spike tooth for wheat, barley, milo, corn and soybeans with little problems-high moisture corn tends to get more of the cob in the bin than is desired but for 20% or less it worked good.
