Dad had a 170, and pulled an Allis 3-16 slat plow, and a 13' Kewanee disk behind it. Handled the plow easy, disk was a bit much.

The plow is pretty easy. 3 x 16's or maybe 4 x 14's. The disc is another matter. We pulled 13 ft AC discs with a tractor like that. BUT, there are 10 ft discs that take 100 HP to pull and you have 54 HP. It's all about the weight and how big of diameter the blades are.

We pulled an 8 foot tandem with a WD and it never had a problem. OTOH that disk should have been retired 10 years before then.

I would say the plow should be 3-16. If the disk is 3pt mounted, 8ft, pull type, 8-10ft. I think you are doing it right to not take it to the limit. How many acres are you plowing? When was the last time it was plowed. If your 3pt is not working right (draft control or position control) then you need a pull plow or disc. Or fix the 3pt. Do you have ballast weights that could be added if needed, are you willing to fill the tires? Also, is you backup tractor smaller or larger than the 170.
