Educate me.  Why is there a drain cock out the side of the oil pan?  I haven't looked closely, but it's above the level of the fill line, isn't it?  Is it to drain out excess oil in the event it was overfilled?

Never had the experience, but I guess you opened that to drain off the unburned kerosene that didn't burn and wound up in the engine oil.

correct, you're removing most of the un-burnt fuel that gets past the rings. It floats on top of the heavier motor oil and can be drained off.

from the WC owners manual-

Dad had a W C with that drain .When burning kerosine you drain out to drain plug and add a quart of oil every morning after a days run.He figgered cost and trouble and more power and broke out part in exhaust to make it run hotter. Wore out three sets of steel an two sets of rubber and it never used oil.PS nothing but GulfPride

Had same type pan on at least one of my WD's too.
We never had to use it since these were gas units only. Not dual fuel.

 Chris

Yup, for draining to proper level when using kerosene. I put a digital oil temp gauge in mine. Like one in site below.
