Finally, built up the courage to pop off the left hand brake cover on my D17D and look inside to see why its been so weak. Looks like the under side of the clevis has been wearing groves right into the drum. At 1st, I blamed the broken front shoe return spring, but I guess it's just excessive wear in general because I looked at the brakes on my WD and all but 1 of the springs is either broken or missing and the WD has the best working brakes on the whole farm! Go figure. You can still buy those springs new, right? Im in no hurry to take the wheel, axle and final drive off just to do a brake job. Especially, after reading all the horror stories on this forum over the years. Heck, even my I.T. shop manual sounds dark and ominous:
"In the event that the brake anchor pin cannot be removed by prying, it may be necessary to drill and tap the anchor pin so that a suitable puller of the stud and sleeve type may be used..."
Yeah, right, and if that fails, whats next, 2 teaspoons of nitroglycerin in the brake compartment?!
