my 7000 smokes black when under load. pump has been rebuilt 7 yrs ago, starts good has little to no blow by,uses very little engine oil leaks a little from front main. Also seems a little under powered, spends its days on sprayer or baler. So where to start looking? pump,injectors,turbo,timing? Has been thus way for several yrs.not getting worse but would like correct so it doesn't look like the tractor pull every time I go uphill. thanks for any advice.

I'd hook to something and pull the snot out of it , get some good heat in the engine, deffintly listen and make sure the turbo spinning good

put a pressure gauge in the intake manifold and check turbo boost pressure! This sounds like a missing plug or blown intake manifold gasket or hose issue to me. You are losing boost pressure to the engine.

On that tractor, you should be seeing 12 to 14 psi boost pressure with the throttle wide open and pulling a heavy load. So, don't use a 100 psi gauge. try and get a 20 or 30 psi gauge for accuracy.

Have the injectors been checked? When I rebuilt my 7000 (several years ago), only one injector checked out ok. The other 5 were just dumping fuel in and I wasn't getting a good burn and black smoke.

one other thing, does this happen to have Ambac/Bosch injectors? Injection line goes in the top? If so, they get installed the wrong direction quite often. The return line is supposed to be toward the valve cover, not toward the exhaust manifold. Them being installed wrong makes a lot of black smoke and lack of power.

Thanks for the replies, checked boost pressure at intake manifold with tractor wide open had nothing. took turbo off and something chewed up the impeller, it did turn free. so ordered new turbo. the injectors pressure comes in the side and return out the top so not that injector,ran right out to look though. hopefully new turbo will fix or will have to look elsewhere. also ordered the elbow that goes to muffler as was totally rusted. is there a gasket between elbow and turbo book not showing 1?

well, a junk turbo will cause a no boost issue, and will give the symptoms you had. While working on it, look over the manifold, and blown gaskets to make sure there's no other leaks. The elbow does have a gasket, it may come with the new turbo. Would be fine without one using new turbo and new elbow, both smooth and flat.

Running the tractor wide open throttle sitting still isn't really a test. It will not have very much boost that way. You'll have to take it down the road up a hill in road gear with a load behind it to get any kind of boost. I'm not saying you may not have a bad turbo, but you have to test differently for good data.

In response to Doc's boost gauge, If you can find a N series for parts combine most if not all had boost pressure gauges installed from the factory and make a handy diagnostic tool. Good Luck, Mike
