My question is how do you go about changing the shoes out? Do they get replaced completely from the inspection opening or do you go in from the side somehow? From looking at the pin it looks to be fixed in place, I thought I had better ask you guys before I get in there and break something.

I searched but found nothing on this. How in the world do you remove the brake shoes from a 185? I have the manual that shows the exploded assembly diagram, but I really cant tell heads from tales on which parts I am looking at from my real life inspection plate view.Replies:

The purple pin (5 on the drawing) will need to go to the left after axle is removed.
Drain fluids as needed. Soak the top pivot pins of brake bands, they will most likely not come out easily, may need a hot wrench for them. They have a slight taper getting tighter as driven in toward center of tractor. Remove anything mounted above the fenders, like ROPS, canopy. Remove batteries, battery box, fenders and platforms. Use safe supports under differential housing and hitch area to support SAFELY! Remove wheel weights, then remove the tires/rims from the centers, this I thought would be easier for attaching chains to wheel center and housing. Attach chain(s) to the axle, supporting axle as in line as possible, remove nuts from axle housing and remove axle. You will want to put new seals in the differential carrier bearings, inspect “O” rings closely, its easier to replace them now vs do it later when you don't have the time to do it. The left side is the easiest and I started on it first, your preference. The hydraulic control assembly will need to be loosened and maneuvered slightly and some linkage disconnected to remove right axle, take your time, it can be done. I did the left side first (the easiest) then went to the right. I did my 185 some years ago and may have forgotten a few little things but you will see these as you work along the way. | I cannot stress enough the importance of reinstalling the RH axle absolutely straight....the axle seal is easily damaged on the RH side. Battery box doesn't have to come off if you bend the platform tab up out of the way and then bend it back down when done.......suit yourself. Also be sure to at least remove (or replace) both brake rods and anti-sieze them.....if you don't....some day you'll be sorry. |

| Well this is what I was afraid of. I was hoping there would have been a way to slip new bands on from the inspection plate, but it looks like that was just me being wishful. I appreciate the help guys. I have had too many close calls by not having brakes and with this type of fix, I think I will clean out my shop, park the Allis in it and start redoing it from top to bottom. |

Marshall - those 185 brakes are band actuated disc brakes. Your braking power comes from the disc part. If the discs are worn, replacing the bands along won't help. Mike

Could you please tell me how to remove a rear axle off of a 185. I have removed the snap ring and cap screw off of the rear axle but still cannot get it to pull out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, |
