Subject: Help my narrow front c pedestal has froze up

| I have a c with narrow front end I used it last year and steering was fine I parked it in barn for a year and now it got real hard to steer and after driving it around almost can’t turn at all. It’s not the gear box under the gas tank but pedestal itself. What could I do or check. Has been dry inside barn |

My CA did the same thing. What happens is the shaft with the steering arm gets little or no lubrication going thru the housing. It gets so dry you can't hardly turn the steering wheel. It requires disassembly to polish the shaft and lube real good. For a permanent fix drill a hole in the housing from the top to the shaft and tap it for a grease zerk before reassembly. Now you can grease the shaft and keep it lubed often with grease . Just ask Dick L

This one was locked up as well. I think this picture shows what needs to be done except where I put the grease zerk. I used the hone to clean out the rust from the shaft that collected on the bushings. I sanded the shaft to have it cleaned up to rotate easy after installed. There is two bushings inside the housing. One at each end. I drilled a hole between the bushings to tap and install a grease zerk. I didn't think thru the location of the hole I drilled and with the tin back on I can't get at the zerk. It was a chore getting the shaft out with it rusted. I personally decide it is coming out at what ever happens. My moto is don't force it go get a bigger hammer. I don't have time for this crap.   I think I used an air hammer with a long punch to drive it out after it first moved. I started it with blocks of steel in the housing using wedges so I could drive the wedges down from the large opening. Looking at the picture I remember now that I used a cold chisel as the wedge to spread the blocks of steel. I know I have a lot more at my disposal than most would have as far as steel blocks and tools because of my age and vocations. |
