A few weeks ago I started helping  a guy who lives a few blocks from me work on a rding mower.  It is a 12 HP Dynamark with a five
speed Peerless transmission.  It runs good but the transmission has issues.  He told me that it just stopped moving in the yard one day.  We got it going again and it moved just fine in the first three gears and reverse.  We removed the unit and opened it up to see what was the matter.  We saw nothing that seemed to be wrong.  We worked for quite a while to get it back together after putting some fresh gear oil in it.  Putting the case back together was a small challenge but we finally got it.  We put everything back under the mower and the transmission was completely locked up.
He got tired of messing with it and told me to come get it and take it home with me.  I went and got it yesterday.  I decided to pull off one wheel and take the drive key out of the axle.  Put the wheel back on and it rolled free and easy up on the trailer.  Now it is sitting in my shed ready to be fixed but I'm not sure what to do.  It's in good shape for being a 30 year old mower.  Good tires, good engine, and everything works except for the transmission.  Does anybody have any advice or help they can offer.  This is an entirely new world of mechanic work for me.
Sorry for the long post.
Thanks,
Brad

I have done a few in the past, but no expert. First off, I would look and be sure it is not the "over-seen" thing.  Out of gear, parking brake off, belt installed correct, etc..
Then take the belt off, and try to spin by hand.  MAKE sure the parking brake is free!!!
If that does not work, try taking it back out, only 4 bolts and a few clips and see what ya see there???

A little bend in the shifter lever will make it not shift. Take the shifter lever off and see if you can manually select the gears by moving the shift quadrant. Get a New peerless transaxle. The counter shaft just runs in the alumanum case it has no bearings or bushings. I had mine repair under warranty at 3 years it lasted 2 more years and the case split. I replaced it with a new steel cased peerless for$75. It's worked for 16 more years without a problem. The same transaxle was used in millions of lawn mowers. Only the shifter pulley and brake brackets are differant. You just put the old ones on.
