This old well was right at the end of my driveway and is a nightmare in the winter when trying to snowplow. Hit that with the tractor bucket and it will throw you off the seat. My question is, is there any reason I can’t cut that off 6” below the ground? I can stick a tape measure down 5 feet before I hit something solid. Not sure what the rod with the nut in the center is and yes the wire in the hole is dead.

If you cut below ground level it must be sealed to keep contaminates from entering the ground aquifer.i sealed mine with a couple bags of quickcrete. Than deregerster it at the county marked it as sealed with concrete. Cut it off and put gravle over it.

I'd cut at least 1 FOOT below grade, not 6", just to be really, really sure. Up here I'd have to do it on a Sunday and hide what I did otherwise 3 or 4 City departments get their noses bent outta shape. To decommision a well, I need permit($1000),eng cert($2000),pro con to do it($3000) so you can see why I wouldn't tell anyone...
Anybody asks you're just removing an old defunct lamppost....

When you put the concrete in hang a steel plate ring the size of the pipe a few feet down in the hole to catch the premix, mix it pretty dry too then once get a load in the pipe take a stick to make sure it settles tight dipping in and out of the plug, once a little has set up fill as far as you want.

Around here ya gotta have a certified person to close 1. County pays for closing it. I had 1 closed, mom had 3 closed on her farm.

WHEW Jay, that's a little spendy!  Just take a 1/4 stick of dynamite and drop it in the hole and RUN.....  Tell the neighbors that the car/truck/tractor backfired....

Around here some people used to set off dynamite in an old hand dug or bored well but usually after they dropped somebody in there that they didn't like.

I assume it’s capped off inside because I can run a tape measure down 5 feet then it hits something solid. Not sure what the fence post is on the inside???

wish it was like that here!, I'm fixing to have to deal with one on my property that's dry most of the year and water isn't safe to drink. It shows both on the county plat and on surveys so I can't quite do the 1/4 stick of DuPont and then stone. Only a licensed
driller can do a well, then the county has to inspect it. I was told to expect a couple of thousand to do it. I am told that property can't sell until dealt with.

Seems now any drilled well is suppose to be regestered and located on property - to abandon one it needs to be grouted by a licensed well company .
once abandoned then it is recorded in well logs with state .
