I inherited my Grandfathers Allis Chalmers WD and am looking for the Serial number. I know it is supposed to be on the top Left Brake differential, but I am still struggling to find it. Can anyone give a detailed description or have a picture of where I should look?

Only the older ones have it there. The newer ones have stamped on the rear differential housing

I looked on the Rear Differential and it is not there. My Dad and I have been all over that tractor and can not find anything close to a Serial Number.

Just above the lift arm shaft on the left side very close to the setscrew with the SQUARE head on it.

I should also mention I have one that is smooth with no number I guess the housing was replaced at some time.

Also to mention that I have one (1950 WD) that has had a later 1952? WD differential housing replaced. About anything can happen out there in the real world!
Regards,
 Chris

Thank you for mentioning this. Apparently something similar has happened to my Grandfather's WD. We cannot find any number on that tractor.

Welcome to the forum HSF!
Question:
Is the drawbar a pin hitch or snap coupler and bell?
That "may" narrow it down some on the year as the WD's started out with a pin hitch until they went to factory snap coupler and then the farmers started converting them over. HTH.

The engine serial number might get you pretty close to year of manufacture, if the engine block is original. I believe someone on the forum has an engine serial number index.

You cannot use the snap-coupler bell as any kind of way to tell the age of a WD. The first WD45's didn't even have it. A WD NEVER had it from the factory, it was always an add-on. When the WD-45 finally did have it available, it was standard equipment UNLESS you ordered it as a "factory delete", meaning it was built without a snap coupler bell.
