Well, after 6 months or so of thinking and debating, we finally decided to get the tractor. Its a 1953 i believe. Bought brand new by the neighbors just down the road. The story starts when my parents were dating. Not sure the date or year but the neighbors wife called and said her husband was out doing feild work and didnt come home, so my dad and uncle went to find him, they found the tractor on top of him and he was in a better place. then they had an auction, another neighbor bought it, had it for years, finally stopped using it, let it sit for a couple years they now we bought it. I got it Tuesday night, washed it for over and hour, i guess there is a tractor under all the dirt, lol. Tore into it today, ordered all sorts of parts, hopefully get her going in a week. I hope you enjoy all the pictures, in the picture of the fender you can see the dent from where is head was crushed...

well, from experience on 226 engines, i pulled the vavle cover off, to check the rocker arm mounts, they looked ok, but they usually fall apart well you release the pressure, sure enough, 2 of them fell apart, i then pulled the rocker arm off, i could see the other 2 were cracked, tapped them with a hammer and they fell apart. why were these so weak? from what i can understand is the rocker arm gets torqued to high, so since we broke one after a rebuild, we've torqued them to 25ftlbs and havent had a problem yet. anyone else figured anything out, that might be a good torque setting to use.

| Not a bad looking unit. Hope you ordered a new fender for it. That would creep me out. Good freind got killed on an M JD. Tractor was cut up for scrap after that. His wife and son said they believed it might do that to someone else if they sold it whole, so they had me take the gas axe and the sawzall to it. I really didn't mind. Ricky was good people. |

Carl, I think the biggest problem with the rocker mounts is people trying release the pressure on the valves by unbolting the mounts. Or maybe trying to bolt the mount down while there is pressure on a valve.
