I’ve been running my C on a water pump and I can’t keep the thing running. It’s 95 degrees outside. I kept thinking it wasn’t getting flow, but the gas line runs a full stream at the carb. It will run for 30 min and then won’t run until it cools down. I’ve taken the carb off 3 times to clean it and found nothing in it, but it’s so hot you can’t hold your fingers on it when it quits. When you take the bottom plug out nothing runs out and I know the floats not sticking because I’ve blown through it. Any ideas on a fix?

Have you checked for spark when it gets hot and won't run?

From what I understand, vapor lock is more of a problem for fuel pump engines than gravity feed, but it's possible.

It could be vapor lock but we usually did not have that problem with C's.
I would look to the ignition.  Especially the coil or (cheap) the condenser.
That is what it sounds like to me.

If there's no gas running out of the carb drain hole when it quits.....it isn't getting gas.

Taking the plug out of the carb should release any vapor lock. Have you taken the gas cap off and checked for fuel flow? This smells like a bad coil, but no gas flow pretty much sounds like a fuel restriction.

Got a picture from the left side, showing from tank to carb? Post it here or email it to me. My email is listed in my profile.
 There's no sense looking at ignition problems till you get gas to it ALL the time.
3 common problems : Float sticking, even if you think it's ok, vent in gas cap plugged, or garbage floating around in the tank, being sucked over the outlet hole after running a while.
 Take the cap off and leave it loose, carefully inspect the tank for debris, or better yet, drain it completely by way of the carb drain, just to see how long the gas will run out without operating the engine.
 The next possibility is one of those stinking rubber gas lines. I have seen them with way too long of a hose, and the hose droops down below the carb bowl at some point between tank and carb inlet. Once the gas level gets down to a certain point, it can and will stop flowing, no matter what gravity says.

on my C the gas cap wont vent and i have to loosen or the engine will sputter out

have you had gas come out the plug at the bottom of the carb. while its still on the tractor at any point or are you just checking at the fuel line?

I had a similar problem on my Oliver 60 once on a tractor ride. It was running fine and then sputtered to a stop. Would restart and maybe run a minute maybe take a while to get going. Someone from the local Caterpillar dealer had screens and gaskets and changed out the screen in the bowl. They ended up hauling me to the next stop and I pulled the carb off. There was a dead fly that had gotten past the old torn screen blocking the float needle. Got rid of the fly and no more problems.

I once accidentally set the carb float too low.
I was on a 2 day tractor caravan with my D-10 ser. III.
It would run good first thing in the morning when the engine and day was cool. But after the first break the carb had gotten heat soaked and the day had gotten warm, this was in August, the engine would not run very well.
A few days after I got home, I took the carb apart and found the problem. It's been running good sense.

I don't know what to make of the carb is too hot to handle situation.
I don't think I ever took one off that fast. However, my JD lawn "tractor", if I shut it off for about 15-20 minutes won't restart. I think the heat soaks in and vapor locks the carb or fuel pump. Fuel pump is a crankcase pressure operated diaphragm type, not a gravity setup. But once running, it just runs and runs.

But bottom line, if ya remove the drain plug and no gas come out, like Doc said, it isn't getting gas. See Charlie's 3-4 reasons. So since it does get good gas to the carb inlet,
and does start up in the morning, it has to be the gas cap not venting. Fuel tank vacuum lock. Guaranteed, my final answer.

Now I wait to hear what it really is, I hope it is an easy and fast fix, but also the weirdest, a new entry in the Murphy book.

Ethanol gas, I used to have to take the hood off my D10 to keep the gas in the tank from boiling the alcohol on a hot day.Also moving the gas line to the outside of the air cleaner will help too.
Take your hood off the tractor and keep the tank pretty full to see if that doesn't help.

If it has a under hood muffler, that could be causing to much heat on the manafold and mag. coil take the hood off or the muffler off

It’s been converted to distributor and then I converted it to 12v. I thought it might be the gas hose getting hot behind the air cleaner so I moved it to the outside, but that didn’t help. It’s getting good flow to the elbow going in the carb when it dies. I pull the plug out on the bottom and nothing but fumes comes out. I thought maybe the manifold is transferring heat to the carb. Going to try pulling the plug and dumping some cold water on the carb and seeing if gas starts flowing as it cools off.

It sounds like your needle valve sticks when it gets hot. If you don't have flow tomorrow, try giving the carb a light tap with a small hammer.
