Engine mounted on stand preparing to yank crank and stick new cam brgs in while I'm at it so I pull the valve cover to get pushrods out and to my HORROR I find a 3/8 layer of "jelly" in the top of the cover.How long has this been goin on?Never known for needing antifreeze.Anyway,going to have to fill and pressure up and hope it's bad enough to show up.This is turning into alot more than it was supposed to.GRRRR! |

| Could be a soft plug in the top of the head, could be orings on the sleeves leaking, rarely a cracked head but could be. Take the pan off, then like you said pressure it up and see where the water comes from. Good luck Steve. |

What color is the "jelly" green or just a lite gray? Green is antifreeze and gray might just be condensation buildup from years of not using a working thermostat. I'd pressure test like the guys said and if you don't find a leak in the head or sleeves, block then it might be the condensation think I described above.

If you are not sure of the history of the engine, replace all core plugs in the top of the head. If you have the crank out it wouldn't be too much more work to replace the o-rings on the sleeves either.

| Liner o-rings leaking.Can you still get piston rings for M&W pistons?I remember guys saying the o-rings are available but smaller cross section.It don't use oil but how do you put it back together with used rings? Bought this in 1980 and my deceased dad overhauled it.I doubt if it has averaged 50hrs a year so at 1500hrs???? |

| There are a couple of thicknesses of piston rings, but yes you can still get them. Measure em up and start callin, Sandy Lake, Albert, Norn Stienman, Norm Meinert, Jimmy D, Tony to name a few. HTH |
