Pa was mowing his lawn the other day, its about 8" high and it was 90+ degrees out. He said it was working hard and suddenly started running on 1 1/2 cylinders. He drove it in the shed it shut it down. I took a peek at it yesterday. Oil looks good, air filter is OK. Started it up, lots of blue smoke and ran rough. Gave it full throttle and it eventually revved up, cleaned up, and ran OK for about 20 seconds, then got to missing and blue smoke again.

If he scored a hole, how could it have run good for a short time? But on the other hand, if its an ignition or timing issue, how can that make blue smoke?

I guess a compression check would be a good start. Any other known issues or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Read an article a few years ago about Ethenol in todays gasoline playing havoc with air and water cooled small engines. Makes the valves stick! First had that happen a few years ago with my HT Honda rider 2 cylinder. I use it for around the property pulling a large cart to clean up debris and branches etc. Was a hot summer day, full cart, headin' back to the compose pile and all of a sudden it was like you pulled a spark plug wire off of one cylinder. Farted, banged sputtered, running on one cylinder. Thought about that article I read and figured I'd toss some Seafoam in it as the article mentioned. Figured I got nothin' ta' loose. Turned out to be a stuck valve just like I read about. Our fuel around these parts has Ethenol in it. One of my Kohler Commands did the same thing last year.  Seafoam took care of that one to!  Damn crappy fuel!!   HTH

It could be a fuel pump. Had it go out on my 782 CC last fall, was pumping gas right in the crankcase. Smoked like the devil and ran like crap!
