Wondering if someone could help answer two questions about  a D-15 a friend is looking at. The man selling was honest and upfront, and told him that it jumps out of 3rd gear. How big a project is this to fix, in time and in money. All My friend says he is going to use it for is to push snow, split firewood, pull loads to his home, ect. The other item is the price. They would like to get $3000.00 out of it. Is this out of line? The machine is straight, tin wise, has new front tires, and the rears are ok. Motor runs ok. Any help would be great. Thank You

It will make a difference if it is a Series I or Series II and whether it is 3pt or snap coupler

My father had his rebuilt back in the mid '70's. Series I. AC dealer did it for about $2200. My opinion: walk away.

3rd gear is the main gear for most use so it is used a lot. Cost wise I have no idea

Like Stan says, fixing third can get costly.  It can be something as easy as the forks not holding the gear far enough in, or the gears itself may have to be replaced.  Either way, you're tearing into the tranny which isn't an easy chore.  If he can get by without third, that's one thing.  I would take it for a test drive and go up and down some hills in all the gears and see if it pops out.   That's what someone on here suggested I did when I got my D15 and it didn't pop out of any gears and it still doesn't.   They are good little tractors, and mine is one of my favorites, but $3000 in this market with the gear popping issue may be a little high.  If it's was three point, it is worth more, but snap coupler and the gear popping, I don't think it's worth more then 2K.   I'm sure you could find a good one for 3000 with no tranny issues in today's market.
