just bought a 1948 model C. coolant leaks into the oil. whats the odds of the block being cracked. he said when he it started to happen when he was driving it and he parked it. didn't drive it since. i still runs fine and he gave me a head gasket

It may not be either one. The first thing to check is the "freeze" core plugs in the top of the head. Pull the rocker cover off and have a look. It could also be an oring on a sleeve leaking. A leaking core plug is pretty cheap and easy fix.

my B had two problems show up at same time. Rust thru freeze plugs in the head and three leaking O rings on the liners. Freeze plug is easy repair, o-rings... not so easy

As they said, why guess? Pull the valve cover and pan and find the leak then fix it.

thanks he gave me a new head gasket i don't know if he knew thats what was wrong or if he was guessing. i still need to get some degreaser and degrease the engine because its covered and i mean covered in a bunch of grease oil and bullsh*t :x

I was gonna say also, don't run the engine with coolant in the oil. Just kind of figured that was a given.

im going to school for diesel technology. im just trying to get some ideas on what you guys think. i changed the oil and started it to at least make sure it ran. and it ran. so its all good.

If I was a bettin'man and it was running when he noticed the leak, I sure would pay $7 for a new valve cover gasket and check the core plugs on the top of the head. If they are bad, you get change from a $5 bill at NAPA, and a sweet deal on a tractor.

If that ain't the problem, then Rick, don't be so discouraging on those O rings. You drove it out on Sunday, didn't you??? And.... it inspired the Build-a-B !!!

I am working on my 1938 WC Maintainer. the engine had good compression so I put oil in the engine and WATER in the radiator, next day I checked the oil dipstick, had gained about 2 inches, pulled the valve cover, it was a freeze plug. I went to NAPA, got 2 new plugs for .59 ea. OK now.

I just purchased a hi crop WD45. It was leaking water into oil. Found a cracked sleeve and all liner orings were leaking. Now it's got a new overhaul kit installed. No more leaks.
