I was driving my 7045 Power Director tractor down the road in Hi range and it came to a screeching halt. Shoved in the clutch as fast as I could. When I started to let the clutch out, it just pulled the engine down. I got it in low range and it moved. I put it in the range shifter in neutral and it still move when I let the clutch out. I thought it might be a bad cable. I took the floor panel off and power washed so I could see what was going on. The lever is moving when I move the shifter. Could it be a broken pin or bent shifter fork? It has always been hard to get into park. It sounds like the low range gear has seized to the pinion shaft. It will move in low range, but when in high range,it is trying to pull in both and then stalls out the engine. Even in neutral,the low range gear is locked to the shaft and it will continue to move. Expensive project.😛 |

Ouch, really sounds like a seized low range gear as Lynn said. If you can see down in there, my guess is the collar will not be lined up with the low range. Lynn's statement sounds right. It's in low range when the lever is in low or neutral. Locked up with the lever in high. I can't pull the shifter all the way back into where low should be. It went into park but I didn't try it while running. I think this will be going to a shop for repair. I don't have the facilities. I can haul it anywhere in Indiana. I'll have to research some shops. | Sounds like what happens after setting for years, then taking for a ride in hi range or needed oil changed a long time ago. Make sure dip stick tube is not loose in housing. If dip stick tube pulled out when you pull dip stick, a hand full of dirt falls in transmission every time the tube comes out. MACK |

I got this tractor a few years ago from the family that bought it new. It was used every year, early years for tillage and later to pull grain wagons and move equipment. It has been my main hay making tractor. Oils and filters have been changed regularly. We had one lock up, because the little rubber grommet (o-ring) on the front of the pinon shaft came apart, or so we believe. Dad always squawks a $0.30 o-ring, cost a $1000.00 rebuild. Thank d21-man. I called Till-Harvest and discussed my tractor's problem. Took the 7045 there Friday. They seemed very knowledgeable about the 7045 and the range shift.
And there were several Allis Chalmers tractors in back.

| I had a 7060 that did that. If you put it in neutral and stood on the brakes sometimes it would free up. Sometimes it would just free up on its own and run for a while and do it again. Always had clean oil in it and level maintained. Eventually parted the tractor out. |

Had s similar deal happen on both dads 7030 and 7045. 7030 broke loose but will pop out of ranges now. 7045 got a range unit from a 7040 put in it as it would not come loose. ------------- In Search Of: 1958 Allis Chalmers D17 Diesel serial #9643D |

An update on the 7045. Picked it up from the shop on Friday. Lynn was correct. The low speed gear had seized to the pinion shaft, so the pinion shaft, gear, bearings, seals and gaskets were replaced. Now if the mechanic put that old fuel in his truck then that was dirty but if I was the mechanic who just repaired it, I would be very hesitant to put back questionable fuel and take that chance. I have always pumped fuel from tank when tank had to come off, then pumped it back in through filter to farmers tank. Does that shop have a waste oil furnace? MACK |

The fuel situation is not something you really want to happen but in the big picture of how much money this repair cost you it’s a small percentage. Who knows maybe it was an honest mistake. ------------- 8030 and 8050MFWD, 7580, 3 6080's, 160, 7060, 175, heirloom D17, Deere 8760 |
