My 1955 CA that my dad bought new, always on this farm has a lifting problem. About 25 years ago I built 3PH brackets on the side of the harness that holds the draw bar and it has worked great. Use the 3PH for rototiller, scraper blade and potato digger. Went to rototill some ground last week went 100 feet and started to lift the tiller it lifted right to the top and would not go down when I pushed the hydraulic control lever down the tiller would not go down. Let it sit for half an hour and it slowly went down. When I started to lift again the control lever had no control to stop the lifting, pushing in clutch is only way to stop lifting. I have changed some of the adjusting screws on the hydraulic pump and it makes no difference. Could something be jammed or broken in the pump?  Never had any problem with this pump, changed oil several years ago and use hydraulic oil which is clean.

I forgot to explain that whenever the PTO is engaged with the clutch the 3PH goes up regardless of where the hydraulic lever is. Both cylinders are on the lifting arms. The only way to stop it from lifting is to push in the clutch. The hydraulics are useless this way.
 What could the problem be?

I would bet you have a little crud in the control valve. Try screwing the adjusting screw in and out a couple times.

I fought with mine for about a week this spring. it sucked small parts up into the position hold valve and would not go down. I took it apart and cleaned it out and it worked acouple times then did it again. after removing the pump and cleaning it out four times I fixed it.  The four control valves that go in from the back have tight tolerances and are returnd by spring pressure. a very small piece will cause them to not return then it will only go up. The 5/16th pressure piston in mine had shattered. the pieces were very small, the first three times I had it apart I thought i had them all. the fourth time I borescoped the whole pump before reassembly. and fount one more piece of spring about the size of a big grain of sand. Has worked good ever since.

That pump is famous for for just such problems. Any FOD in the tranny is a recipe for hyd trouble. I would drain tranny fluid and filter to see what if anything is in your oil. When mine was doing it I found a silver mine in the oil.
