My neighbor heard this thing coming from a mile away and thought it was a 2 cylinder John Deere!
http://youtu.be/0v7MxNgebSM" rel="nofollow - http://youtu.be/0v7MxNgebSM
It's a 1959 black bar grille D17. A neighbor a few miles away was going to take it to the scrapyard. They owned it as long as I can remember, but never did any maintenance on it - they were happy as long as it ran. They came by a few days ago and said we can have it for scrap price. 'Nuff said! Drove it home under its own power but she doesn't sound very healthy!
It had a loader on it for most of it's life and just did chore work. It has the factory distributor drive power steering which works good and the transmission does NOT jump out of any gears!
Haven't decided what to do with it yet. At least it's not going to China!

That's cool. I've asked the scrap yards around here to call when tractors come in but they never do

If you don't want to fix it up, I do....you've GOTTA fix it up, you don't have anything invested in it so far. Some people have all the luck. CONGRATS!!!

Good morning. WOW. Congratulations. And a 3Pt. hitch adaptor. How big is that smile on Michael? Would Lloyd Kellog have sold that tractor? Ross.

No, it has decals from the Massey dealer in Meaford. You and Calvin passed by the farm when you delivered the D15 diesel. Michael was happy because we didn't have to pull it home! In first gear, it barely made it up the hill by our farm. I ran back to grab a tractor and chain before I heard it chugging up the hill. I think the engine has a decent knock in it. You know we already have lots of projects :)

It's running better running badly on just two-and-a-half cylinders, than ANY JD sounds running full on!!!
Okay, so... if it's got coolant in the cooling system, and just oil in the pan, then this is probably fixable in oh... prolly under three hours. Sounds like it's trying to hit on one of the two missing, and it doesn't sound like it's got a serious compression leak... so probably worn distributor cam, fouled plugs, bad wires, or something in that realm.
And the tires roll!!! And it has a 3-point adapter! Good save!

Nice Score! Like Dave suggests, I'd check the obvious and if nothing major jumps out at you, give it a good once over and tune up with all the basics. plugs, wires, cap, etc... See where that gets you. Getting it running on all 4 would be a 110% improvement, LOL! I'd almost bet with all the basic maintenance things and some new fluids all around it may just be good to go? Keep us posted!

New points, plugs, wires and a muffler that actually works (borrowed from my WD45). Sounds a lot better, but still has a nasty knock to it. Sounds like it is more at the front of the engine. Any thoughts as to what it could be?

If you pull the plug wire it should stop knocking. If it is a rod it sounds good enough to just drop the crank, have it turned or built up and turned and you'll be good to go.

Have the valves been adjusted? Kind of hard to tell where its coming from. You can take a 3/4 in rubber hose and use it like a stethoscope around the engine to narrow down the source of the knock. Of course, you can also purchase one from a parts store. I used a rubber hose about 3 feet long to diagnose a knock on my sons 73 Super Beetle. We had just installed a dual carb and intake kit on it. After driving it about 5 miles it developed a severe knock. Was coming from cylinder # 3. After pulling the engine out, pulled the head off. There laying in cylinder #3 was what looked like a bearing from a bearing cage. Only way it could have got there was when we pulled the old intake, it must have been laying there and rolled into the cylinder. Ruined the head, jug, and piston. Just gave me an excuse to go big, and put 1750 cc oversized jug/piston kit in it. Has more power and can now make it up steep hills at 55 mph! Lol

From the video, (the link works now) the 'knock' sounds loudest when you are on the right side of the engine (from drivers seat). I have to agree, probably the pulley. Sounds better than mine!! Well, at least a lot quieter... I use to use just a yard stick to 'hear' the engine. You just put it up to your ear and moved the other end around and sure as heck, there's where the noise is coming from. BUT, the stethoscope from HF is well worth the money. Especially at this stage in my life,,,,,,what'd you say?? YOU STOLE that tractor.....
