Subject: Late B Starter Rod Mystery

I recently purchased a 1951 B (SN 118xxx) which had the starter rod pictured below.  The starter switch lever was flipped, so this was setup as a push rod.  My first instinct was to flip the lever and change it back to a pull rod, then I realized why it was flipped in the first place - the rod hits the gas tank since it is straight.  I looked at the rod on my 1956 B and it has a bend just like a CA.  I have since replaced it with the CA rod in the picture, but I am stumped why the original rod was straight.  The top rod was definitely original and had not been modified.  Here is what the parts book shows.  I wonder if the top rod in the picture is 225588?  If so, was there a different switch lever used with this rod?  Thanks, Brian.

My B,C and CA are all push start. The B and C are on the bottom and the CA is on top but a CA gas tank has an indentation for this and the B and C tanks do not.

starter switch are all the same. you just turn the starter upside down, and rotate the head 180 degrees and reinstall. all are push start.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I use the term push/pull with respect to the rod, not the starter button.

My CA has always been pull  on the rod and the flipper pushes on the stater switch. My G was a pull start when I got it but it will start with the starter now. LOL

Brian, I would imagine the B's got changed to the pull rod some time soon after the CA came out. Yours might be one of those in between ones where they used up the tanks and rods left over from the B-C era which had a push rod start and no indent in the bottom of the tank. Since it is a 51 I would guess the push rod was original. Charlie

Maybe that serial number break wasn't exactly accurate.

The early B , prior to serial # 113779, had the starter rod along side of the battery box, you had to push on it. The later B, after serial# 113779 had a pull rod like the CA.
So a 1951 would have the push rod down at the battery. Bob

Bob 113779 is a 1950 model. What Brian is saying I think, is he has a late 51 with the serial number after the break that has an early push rod set up.

GEE, I had a B in 1953  that I thought was a 1950 and had the push rod. I guess it must have been a 49. So I guess that a 50 would have the pull rod. but then it should should have gas tank with the strap the same as the CA and with the indent above the starter. Parts manual shows tank change at the same serial # as starter rod. The older tank was discontinued. My parts book is dated 55.  Bob

Charlie, I'm inclined to agree with you that it was an interim/transition setup.  To clarify: mine has the indentation in the bottom of the tank and the rod is in the same location as a CA (not the lower mounted rod found on earlier B's), just as the parts book specifies.  The only difference is that it was setup to push from the seat instead of pull.  Think of pushing on a CA starter rod from the seat.  My fix was to swap out the straight rod with a CA rod and flip the starter engagement lever.  Here is a picture:
