I have the pedestal all apart on my CA and got the shaft out of the pedestal.  Both shop manuals show the pinion gear as only having some teeth. I thought maybe they were just saving on drawing it out but it also said to make sure the pinion went back on the shaft the same way by lining up the dots otherwise it would not turn short enough in wone direction.  Well, my gear has teeth all the way around.  Why would it not work just to turn that gear 180 degrees and have fresh teeth?  Not sure it has ever been apart. The bearing fell apart, there is no hint of the top seal, but there are 4 shims (including the gaskets) at the top and 2 on the bolt that fastens the pinion.  Thanks for advice.

That's the pinion for a C. If you look close the indexing mark is offset on the tooth closest to it. When you turn it around its indexed improperly and will turn sharp to the left and only half as far to the right. Did it on my dads tractor and wound up taking it back apart. It didn't seam like much of a differance just one tooth but it was more like 15 deg differance.
