several years ago, I ran accross a pto adapter that geared down a 1000 rpm tractor to run 540 implements. It was a round gear box, about 12 to 16 inches in diameter, that slid onto the 1000 rpm shaft, then had a 540 shaft sticking out the back to hook a 540 implement onto. It had to be chained to the draw bar to keep the gearbox itself from turning. It was the only one I've ever seen, and I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of such a thing as to whether any company still makes something of that sort, or if they are all long gone. The reason I ask is that I could really use one right now to run my 540 baler with my 8070. (It would have to go from large shaft 1000 to 540). I know that they make just a straight adapter to go that way, but I am not enthused about running the tractor engine way slow, or the baler too fast. I like the idea of the gear reduction. Any info would be greatly appreciated. TIA. Darrel

They were made by Hub City. Not sure if the company is out of business but they don't make those adapters anymore. They were made mostly for Farmall Cub and Kubota that used the small pto shaft that ran engine speed and the wrong direction. I remember seeing a book that showed all the different configurations they had. There were 2:1 and 3:1 adapters. They are out there so just keep looking and asking around. I had one years ago but sold it. Now if we are on the same page here keep in mind they are a gear reducer therefore they will change direction of the shaft. Some applications it doesn't matter. If your does then you will not something planetary driven and I've never seen that.

If the thing fits a 1000rpm PTO and has an output shaft of a standard 1 3/8 540 PTO, I doubt it would turn backwards. There wouldn't be any use for it. The company still makes PTO adapters. It was probably a planetary set up to reduce rpm so the would be no reason it would turn backwards if it was made to run a 1000rpm PTO at 540rpm.

It is a model 390 gear reducer. My brother is a Hub City dealer. I could check on a new price but I would guess about $600 minimum.
