Hi to all, I would like to say what a great board you all have here. I went to a show in Rice Lake last weakend and now I am a proud owner of some old Allis news mag. and found this site. Anyway my dad and I have a small beef farm and have a D17 with a AC loader. We had the tractor for 15 years and 14 years with a loader never had a problem this spring we put a new frount end on and dad got 7.50 16 tires the old ones were 6.50 16 the new ones did not fit unless we turn the rims the other way. About a mounth ago I was loading bales on the bale rapper going good then about the 40th bale one of the frount rims broke, pulled right through the bolts finished with a swear word but starts with a John and ends with a deere. Anyway got to NEW rims 40 more bales did it AGIAN with the new rim. We got to new 6.50 16 tires put the rims on the right way now and havent used it much intill 2nd crop. My ? is do you think turning them rims around would do that? I think it would my dad says no way. Please tell me what you think Thanks Eric

we put 5 hole buick car rims on ours when it was used as a loader tractor they lasted longer than the factory rims

more sidewall with a 7.50 to shift weight? (bungi-effect) and of course new rims are probably low quality

The problem you are having is because the rims are turned aroud, which is fine, but the lug bolts are bottoming out on the hub before the rim is held tight and as it starts to move it cracks and fails, what you need to do is get a rim reinforsement ring, which you can get at Shoup, or a good tire dealer put that on over your rim using the same bolts and it will squueze the rim tight before the bolt bottoms out.

Some of the new replacement rims I've seen say right in the listing not recommended for use with a loader. It says so on the new rims I bought for my D17D. I don't plan to ever put a loader on it, so no big deal for me.

Eric - they make HD rims for loader work. An example is the one Tony @ Tony's Tractor sells - see link and scroll to the bottom. You might check with Tony to see if these would work on a D17 with 7.50X16's or if he can source a similar but wider rim with the right offset to work for you. I'm with Mike. There are heavier duty rims made for loader work and the 7.50X16 tires need a wider rim than the 6.50X16's. I got my rims and tires (7.50X16's for my D15SII Loader tractor) from Miller Tire (they explained to me what I really needed); came all set up and ready to bolt on the front end.

Thanks guys for all the help. The new rims were suppose to be heavy duty for a loader BUT looking at tonys web site just now the light rims are 65 and the heavy ones are 80. We paid 65 at downing tractor parts so I am gessing we got the light ones.

Welcome to the forum! You're only a couple of hours from where I'm from, Ashland WI. I'm out in Kenmare ND now, but miss WI. Good to see more WI people here. Stick around, you'll learn a lot! Good luck with your D17, that's a good tractor. Dad has a D15 II, that we wouldn't get rid of for the world, good tractors.

another issue that may or maynot be inplay in this event is that the bore on most rims have a square side and a radiused side. If they are on so the square side is over the pilot the pilot carries the weight not the bolts. If the rad. side is in over the pilot the bolts are carrying the weight-thus broken bolt holes. JCinPA

Eric, Welcome to the best tractor site on the web. JC makes a very good point. If the face of the rim isn't seated against the face of the hub, I wouldn't expect the rims to hold up long at all. I would add, when the rims are offset out, you are also adding leverage to the equation. More leverage makes things break easier. Charlie

We have heavy fronts , the wheel center is thicker than original rims weigh 24 #. They are welded all the way around. $80 + the ride. fit WC on up to D-17 with 5 bolt hub. Thanks Tony
