I was getting ready to use my D 14 and noticed a leak around the lower radiator hose , the hose was in rough shape, so I removed it and went to get a new one .The local Mom /Pop parts store I usually deal with was closed today, so I went to the 3 Box Parts Stores we have here, to get a simple radiator hose, But my friends it wasnt that simple I could get none of these parts professionals to match up a hose, kept asking what it was for , and when I told them an Allis Chalmers tractor they would look at me and say   You guessed it (Its not in our computer system ) I would say I dont care what it fits as long as it will fit an 1 1/8 water outlet. None would match it lol I finally gave up went to Tractor Supply hopeful they might have one and they did, so in the morning install new hose.
Any tips to install hose as mine still has the drain tube, Thanks for the tips and listening to my rant     Rodd

Common enough rant. No parts guys old enough to know what a tractor is, let alone, an AC...Wink

As to the hose install, IIRR, its not too bad, if the hose clamps are lined up so's you can get a wrench on 'em.  Do yourself a favor, and coat the inside of the hose(s) with some never-seize compound, It'll make slipping them on easier...

BTDT.. made my own hoses up from box of car rad hoses I got from local mechanic. Old stock, dusty, back room shelf..free was a GREAT price. Had to cut a couple to get the right lengths as previous ones were bodged as well.
I did take the time to clean the steel 'corner tube' and installa NEW drain cock valve gizmo. HAvce to agree ,getting the hose clamps on the 'right way' round took some trial and erroe ,but so far 5 years and no leaks...knocking on wooden head !
Wished I'd thought of neversieze..that's a GREAT tip !

The old guys that know how to mix and match are a dying breed  and some of the new guys do not seem to care.

Rodd It can be the hose but be sure to check the weep hole in the water pumpalso this could be your leak also.

I agree with you to a point. I am a young guy in the parts trade. I am thankful that I have two other older gentlemen in my department that are kind enough to share their wisdom. That is the key difference. Having good teachers available able to share learned lessons or tricks of the trade. Along with that it takes an open mind and the willingness to keep learning. Sorry, you kind of struck a nerve with me, as I am the young guy and get grouped in with the less eager parts people. I will say this though, the right information can lead to the right answer or the flip side of that, asking the right question to get the right answer.

several years back I was rebuilding a carburetor on a 69 Cheby truck. Went to the " auto store" to buy a gasket/ rebuild kit.. Told the guy I needed a "carb kit"........... answer is " what is a carburetor ?" .............. Helped him look it up in the book and they had 4 kits on shelf......... said he worked there 4 years and NEVER sold a kit, and NEVER heard of a carburetor !!

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I have had decent results with a very light smearing of silicone grease inside hoses for installing and removing.

if the lower one is leaking ya might as well change the upper on as well.  I would recommend 2 clamps on each connection.  put new hoses on my d14 and had a clamp fail a year later...I have to take the alternator and brackets off to get to my hoses.

hahahahah....

had oil changed other day, kid likes my 97 F150( 70,000 mles on it) and somehow 'carb' got into the conversation. Same thing, he's NEVER ever worked on one, pro taught 'class A' mechanic...sigh...
Yesteday needed to push some snow, turn on gas, pull choke, turn key, vrump... D-14 comes alive. ran like a top though I was getting carb icing so added my homemade shields. Made from plastic election signs. heck they were free, easy to cut,a nd sadly more on the way this year....
Alsways found rad hoses sitck real good, never thought about 2 clamps technique. Be a good safety feature, especially when farming lotta acres!

I was lucky when the clamp broke I was just outside the garage and NOT in the pasture!!!

edit:  I've been lucky all parts for the d17 napa has had in the computer if not they will look them up in the book. heck they even got me a brake booster fer a 1968 c60 chevy dump.

Big differences between Napa stores.  I head to the rural one if I need tractor parts.  The people in the small rural store are way more accomodating and informed on tractor parts.  If I go into the city, the computer is all they know.
Fortunately I live between these 2 stores, so distance is not much different.

Glad you had luck at Tractor Supply.  I went there for plow shares for my ford 101 plow. One store the person didn't know what I was talking about.  I found the rack of shares but not the one I needed.  Went to another store and they had no shares of any kind.  That person seemed to know what they were but had no idea if they would be getting any for spring. Finally ordered from NH dealer.

Thanks for all the input I got in reference to my D 14   Happy to say hose put back on with little problem and used anti seize on both hoses, a good tip.
In reference to parts ,our local TSC store has a limited parts supply but do stock some hoses , points etc.
Ive told several folks about my encounter with the parts folks and always get a similar story.
But seriously in a few more years what are people going to do for older parts???
Again Thanks
Rodd
