After having distributor trouble, I was wondering how much work it would be to remove the dist. and install a mag. I have a spare mag and could have used it to track down the problem on the CA the other day. Might leave it on for good. Do I need a mag drive for a CA like the mag drive for the early WD's with mag? I assume it would be the same for the B,C and CA. And if anyone has one you would sell, let me know.
Thanks

Later B's, C's, and CA's all used the same CE 125 Cubic Inch engine. I ASSUME that a mag would bolt right up and work just fine provided you go through timing it correctly etc. etc. since B's and C's use mag's on those engines just fine.

My 51 has a distributor but I have been told they came out with a Mag. Unbolt the distributor and bolt a mag up.

I don't know the history but I'll bet very few if any CA's came with mags. However the change is quick and simple if you have a mag drive that most likely you do not.  You might find one off an early B that was converted to a Delco batt ign.

So I guess the mag drive is somewhat of a hard item to find? Well I'll keep my eyes open.

Thanks

The distribuitor replaced the mag on the B, C, CA, WC, WD, and WD-45.  Later models of all had distribuitors.  In fact, we replaced many mags on the above units with distribuitors.  If you have the proper mag for your tractor it is just a matter of taking off the dist and putting on a mag.  Should work easily.

Howevr, since I still believe the dist is better than the mag I would look into a solid state dist and replace it with that.
Good Luck!

I have been back and forth with a distributor and a mag on a C I have with no problems. The C distributor is not exactly the same as the one that's on my CA.
I have been told the drive for some distributors is different than a mag drive. If they look the same they should interchange.

If it has an O.E. distributor, you will have to change the governor gear. A factory governor for a dist has the drive gear for the dist all as one piece. I know I have a mag governor gear somewhere, but I'd have to look for it. The only benefit I can see for having a mag would be not needing a battery and charging system.

You said it better than I could. I have 2 such mag drive gears but won't part with them because I like mags as they are a self contained ign system. If your charging system isn't up to snuff you can still use the tractor.

We have a few of the governers with the mag drive.  But there may be a difference inthe housing too.  If you can pull your distributor and see a round plate with 2 drive dogs ont he distributor, then you can swap easily.  If you have a long shaft on the governer with a little gear on the end, you would need to change more than just the mag/dist.

As a matter of fact the first CAs were magneto equiped. As others have stated using the appropriate governor from another B/C/CA, and any mag from a B, C, CA, WC, RC, WF, or WD will work on your tractor.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't think about the drive gear being different. Sounds like I will stay with the dist and put electric ignition in it this winter.
