Hey all,
Need some advice on if I should be dragging this sucker home. :)
The seller is wanting to keep the door and the outside dual tires, but I keep the rims.
I have better tires I can trade him so he doesn't have to hire a tireshop to pull the tires off, but he doesn't seem game for that.
Also, the door is intended for his other 7050, even though the paint is better on his, but on his they drilled a few holes to put a bracing plate on to hold the broken window in, so even after a replacement piece of glass is installed there will be 4 holes in it. IMO I would rather have an original door with matching paint, but not him.
He is also debating about keeping the back glass.
I know where he bought the tractor, and it was sadly fairly complete when that previous owner got it, but his loser neighbor needed a radiator, and took this one without paying, and cut the small upper hydraulic line when removing and a few other things. most other coolers are in the cab. I will be getting some side panels with it. has all the 3pt arms, but no top link.
No idea why it was parked to begin with, but so far I think the engine is locked. IDK if its worth saving...
upgraded hydraulic couplers like newer models, 3 remotes, aux tank, etc.
He is wanting around 600 bucks, so on price point alone its pretty good... :)

I would think for that price you could part it out and make some money on it, if you find it ain't worth fixing.

People piss away $600 on worse. If it was close I’d take it.

Buying that tractor will be cheap. Owning and repairing it will be expensive. Tough call.

When I was young ,..and single,...and dumb, I could easily spend six hundred bucks in the bar in a month. And all that money was just pissed away. If you spend six hundred on this tractor, at least you can look out the window and see a tangible asset. Darrel

GM,
My stock answer to anyone asking the same question "what does 'need' have to do with it? I certainly don't "need" a pole barn full of projects awaiting my time plus a few outside. LOL Bob@allisdowneast

gee I just paid $100 for a 30 year old lawn tractor I don't need ..heck I'd give 600 for the tractor, far better deal even better if you can use 'something' off it to fix one of yours. I'm thinking ONE tire is worth a few hundred ??

Well, they aint makin new ones... My all time championship bar tab was about $1200 bucks...paying for it again now 35 years later...buy that tractor asap. You are buying a "core" for rebuilding. It WILL cost money, but what does a 150 hp non computer tractor cost? And they were/are very good tractors. A door, good side panels, couple sheets of glass, as the song says "took a look inside" see what needs rebuilding. Dont have to do it all at once...Looks like a good save project tractor. It looks like it is too soon to knock it over the head. At 5 or 600 bucks, I dont think you can get hurt... years ago we went to an auction for a black belly 7060 PS, clean plus, plus, plus, very nice tractor but a little high on price. The guy had it all polished up. There was a 7040 there, it looked BAD. Checked it over real good, took it home for $2500. I spent a few days on that thing, seat recovered, found a nice set of 4 used goodyear 18.4-38 tires, put new ones on the front. Fixed a pile of little things, polished, armour all, even the batts were good just neglected. The owner brought it across the road to get rid of it at tht neighbors auction. Went and looked at his equipment, he had twice the ponies he needed for the machines he was pulling. Turned out to be one of the best on the farm. Pulled like a freight train, it was a very nice "spare" to the 8030 mfwd that my father had at the time. jmho, good luck and keep us posted.

The ship is ours gentlemen. :)
Drug it home today.
He got alot easier to get along with when he got hit with 5 other projects that needed to happen immediately, so he quit caring about this project.
I got the door and back window, and he took me up on me trading in two good 20.8s against it, so the above pictures is how it came home.
Drawbar is welded junk, but the cast hanger is perfect. lots of little goodies here and there.
I know its a pipe dream, but IMO it wouldnt be a bad rig to put back together either.
Until then, she can sit and donate a few parts here and there. Not the worst 600 bucks I ever spent... :)

I would actually think of putting it together and using it. But if not there's a lot of $ in parts. I'd say you did good, every time I go to buy parts I think how nice it would be to have a parts unit.
I am still on the edge of buying a second 7040, wants just under $5000 with 20.8 dual's but looks rough. Not many 140 hp tractors around here for $5000
