I have a question on something that just started happening on my HD16.

I am leaking some type of oil on the right rear side of the tractor directly under the rear sprocket. Nothing on the outside to see and the oil is puddling UNDER the track and looks to be leaking and dripping through the track and under the very rear of the track. Here is what is puzzling.

1.Tractor has not moved an inch since August as I am working on it.
2. Tractor has not been started since August as I have the batteries out and rewired the cables and other
     electrics.
3. I have not changed or opened up the final drive bungs, and have not touched any of the other hydraulics.
4. Saw a wet spot of oil UNDER the track with no leaking visible on the outside of anything. I crawled under
the tractor last weekend and a few moist areas but cannot find any sign of any significant leaking anywhere.
5. No hose leaks anywhere on top, around or under the tractor.

Question is what else could it be at the very back of the machine under the right rear sprocket other than a final drive leak. AND,, if it is why would it just start to leak on its own after all these months with the machine never being moved, started or oil filters changed.

I will send pics tomorrow but I think my description should suffice for now. Hoping to find a smoking gun on this one guys.

Thank you

final drive.  outboard seal leaking and running down outside of sprocket where you cant see it.  not sure why but that is where its coming from.  its possible the metal on metal sealing rings are grooved or not perfectly flat and the oil found a spot to creep out after you brought it home.  since its not a significant leak I would just keep and eye on your oil level and run it.  might stop leaking after some use.    if it gets worse that's when you may need to break it down.   outside one is a lot easier than the inner.   the gaskets are available but the rubber bellows part is not if I recall.  I did one of mine a couple years ago.   some wire got in between the inner seal and the case and pushed the gasket in.  easy fix but a lot of work to get to it.

You da man Cal. Thank you. I have the sprocket covers on all 4 sprockets. They are all off for painting and one has a crack.

The only one not off is the one with the leak behind it. The bolts are rounded and will have to do some heating to get them out.

Thank you again. I felt pretty strong it was a final drive issue one way or the other.

If you don't have the bolts out heat the head red hot and wait until it cools most of the red out, then hit it hard with four lb. hammer. Let it cool while working on the others. Use a 6 point socket and drive it on if necessary. I usually hit them them three or four times.

You're a mind reader Leon. 3 came out using. 6 point impact wrench .

As is often feeling smug and powerful I gave the last bolt a turn with a cheater bar on it and snapped it off. I gave 3 out of 4 bolts in good shape so not worried. I'll drill it out . Thank you

You nailed it Cal. Got the right rear drive sprocket cover off and found a light coating of fresh oil at the bottom of the outer drive cover. The one that is circular with bolts holding it on in a circular pattern.

The face was dry but ate very bottom of the cover you can see fresh oil that has seeped under and behind the sprocket and then dripping on the lower track where it has puddled. You were spot on. No oil on the track itself as it dripped between two plates.

Is this a tough seal or gasket to replace??

washed the outer cover on the rear sprocket with degreaser to monitor amount of leakage.

Found that almost every bolt on the outer cover was slightly loose and took a half turn to snug up. That may be what the problem was but that would be too easy.

After a couple of day, no oil showing up around the outer final drive assembly. Forgot to mention that when I first got the tractor home, the oil level in the final drive case was visible but low. After checking this weekend none visible. Assuming what was left leaked out. Dumping whats left and filling back up with clean oil. will be sure to look for any metal shavings or bits of metal.

Previous owner had this tractor for 8 years or so and I don't think he did any service work on anything in that time.

I have done all the routine fluid and filter swaps and replaced battery cables, batteries, some broken wires through out machine. fired her up yesterday. Boy was she ready to run. Sounds great.

Jerbob, on the broken bolt you can weld a nut to it, let it cool, and a lot of times it will turn right out. And yes it's better to use an impact turned down low to keep from breaking the bolt. If it doesn't come right out repeat step one. Sometimes you can have success by drilling a hole in the bolt, heat it red hot and let it cool. This can shrink the broken bolt just a tad and using an easy out and spray oil you can get them lots of times.

Thank you Leon. Good idea on the broken off bolt. Till I get it out, it will bug the crap out of me knowing I busted it off.

hahahaha
