Stuck in first gear, pulled the shifter and cover - sliders, forks etc. all looked good. Put it back on - still stuck in first. Pulled it off again, tried to work the bar the  1-2 fork is attached to - would not move then it moved real fast and something went flying - could not find it. I assume it is a spring with a ball or something that keeps pressure on the bar to keep it in gear. Needed to move the tractor so put the cover and shifter back on - will not stay in 1st unless I hold it in place. Any ideas - quick fixes? Is there some website I can view a parts diagram so I have some idea of what I am looking for or get a part number so I can start searching.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could buy a manual from Darin and help support this site.  http://www.3000toys.com/allis/manuals.asp - http://www.3000toys.com/allis/manuals.asp

Thanks for the link. Would the service manual have the information or do I need the illustrated drawings book? It seems like the service manual would be more useful long term, but not sure it would have the part numbers.

It sounds like the shifter tower is worn. Take the tower apart and it will probably be worn on the edges where the gearshift contacts them. If you look down through the gearshift hole it will look ok but you take it apart you will see it. Just carefully weld up the rounded edges and grind smooth. Reassemble and it should work fine.JP

Thanks Jack, you said it right and made it sound right too. I didn't post because I didn't know how to say it right.

Probably the detent ball was split and it wedged. When you forced it got spit out because it won't hold in gear now. I've seen transmissions where the detent ball and spring were removed and replaced from the outside and others that require taking the shifting rail nearly out at least sliding it past the ball, then holding ball and spring down while you work the shift rail back into position. I don't know anything about the details of the WD-45 transmission.

Thanks for all the help. I have it home and in the shed and will have time to work on it tommorow. It looked like the shifter end was worn at one time and brazed up by a previous owner and then ground back down to the original shape. I will compare to the pictures when I get it apart. My best guess is it was a broken detent ball which caused the problem. I've never had a transmission apart before and did not know the proper terminology. Unless there is something under where the battery box bolts to the front of the shift tower it must have to be replaced from the inside.  It is kind of tight in there but I assume it can be done.

My best tool might just be the camera.  The speed I get things done is quite slow and my web page makes it look better than it is sometimes.  Thanks.  Tom

Well it's a good thing you take your time and take good pictures Tom. It's really helpful trying to explain some things with a good picture. And to top it off there is another nice Orange tractor saved for the next generation. With your stuff and Dick L's a guy could rebuild most of a tractor just by following along. Charlie
