I've been told that there is a wheel speed difference between these two models. Is there? Books I look at show both models to be 2 1/2 mph in 1st gear. I have heard that a 45 diesel is slower in 1st. Can someone clear this up for me? Thinking of building a transfer sled tractor. Thanks for the help.

Old WD's had a low gear of 2.5 MPH.  Late WD's and all WD-45's had a low gear of 2.3 MPH.  All WD-45 diesels and all D-17's have a 15% slower ring and pinion gear set making ALL gears a slower ratio, but the engines run more RPM's to get the ground speed back up to where the others are.  I've got all the transmission gear ratio numbers at home, but these are the basic differences.

Low gear ratio thru the differential (not the final drives) is 18 to 1 for a D-17 or WD-45 diesel......15.3 to 1 on a WD/WD-45 with curved gearshift..........13.3 to 1 on a straight stick WD.
