Hello everyone.
A question on adjusting the clutch on my HD16. I have the manual and it says you have to engage the starter to get the clutch adjustment ring in the right position to loosen the bolt and turn the adjusting ring.
is this a big deal? I have the batteries out rewiring the tractor so can't turn over the engine. Is this something that can be done by hand or just wait to adjust till batteries are back in?
I put a pull gauge on the clutch lever and it was only about 10 pounds an i think explain why low reverse wants to pop out of position and it is hard to get into gear sometimes.
Thank you

you can turn the engine over by hand using the fan and belts. the clutch lever pull wont have any effect on coming out of gear other than the interlock that prevents you from moving the shifter when the clutch is engaged. hard to get in gear may be you arnt pulling back on the clutch lever to engage the brake or the brake needs adjusted/replaced.

Hadn't thought of that one. Thank you. You told me a while ago that I may have something going on with the shifting springs or yokes on first and reverse as they are next to each other. Have not gotten to that yet. Will let you know when I do however. Thank you Cal.

You need to read up on adjusting the clutch brake and do that when you have it open to do the clutch.
I know Cal knows this but you are pushing on the clutch lever to engage the clutch brake not pulling.
I have never had to adjust on the interlock stuff on any crawler but must be a way.I know on a Cat I took the mechanism off the side of the transmission and cleaned up everything and lubed it good and it stopped jumping out of reverse. But the Cat transmission is a bit different than AC in they had a forward reverse lever so reverse in each gear.

Thank you. I had not heard the term Clutch Brake. I just read that if your clutch lever has too little or too much pounds of pull it needs to get adjusted. My clutch lever when pulling from the forward ( at the dash) to the engaged position is showing about 10 pounds of pull. Not yet sure what that would cause or what I might see by adjusting the clutch adjustment ring but want it to spec.
The clutch brake was not something i had heard of but not that you told me I will go back to the manual for reading.
Much Appreciated Cal and Ray54. Good stuff.

Can someone let me know if this is correct. When the term Clutch Brake was mentioned and its need to be adjusted as well as the pull tension of the clutch lever on my HD16, I looked it up in the manual.
My book that came with the tractor is saying that there is NOT a clutch brake on my unit as it has the torque converter and that acts as a clutch brake. My HD16 is a DC model. Not power shift but does have the torque convertor.
Is this correct?

Question Cal. Can you tell me what would happen or what you could notice if your clutch was Too Tight or Over Tightened ? Say your clutch lever was over 30 pounds of pull to get clutch lever snap over? Just a general question. Thank you.

added stress on the throwout bearing, added stress on the engine thrust bearing. how much or if it would matter? who knows, you arm will be tired though

Thank you Cal. I had a inaccurate spring scale when I was showing 10 pounds of pull. I used a 28 pound scale and I maxed it out pulling the lever to the snap over position.
Funny thing is that it snaps over pretty well and does not feel that hard. Not having a dozer in the past however not sure what is hard to pull.
Thank you Cal.

Kind of a balancing act to get it right. Need it tight so not slipping and wearing the surfaces. But you need it to release with a good bump of the hand if you get in a tight place and need to get it stopped fast. Always remember it could be your life even more so with a dozer working around trees and brush. Canopy and sweeps are a big help but limbs can still whip by them.
Have no experience on the torque converter models, the ones I us are the beginning of the wet clutches. So I have several of the same model D6 Cat with dry on some and wet on others. But no matter how well it holds up the clutch is a better part to abuse than the whole tractor by not slamming it into thing IMO.

Thank you Ray and Cal for weighing in on what appears to be a very common sense question and you gave me good answers for it. i take some of the things I read in the manual exactly and like having the folks that use this equipment give opinions and advise.

Off topic but do you purchase any filters online and if so whom is your source? I have an AGCO dealership that I can get them from but their markup is crazy. Example, i have an air filter to replace, they are saying its $75.00. Its the dry filter not oil bath. I have seen others for half that but not sure if they match up. Thank you.

I get all my filters through my local carquest guy. Im surprised AGCO has anything for the construction/industrial side. Napa would be another good source if you have someone that can look in a book not just at a computer.

My Agco Dealer is also a Fiat Allis supplier. I believe he took on some of the parts but he has found me track adjuster seals and has access to all the filters from the book. Only problem is how expensive he is. With the Agco cost and his markup its up there.
Thank you.
