The impulse on my FM magneto is intermittant and probably needs lubrication. Is it hard to take one apart and get it back together RIGHT??

Ted,
There could be a half a dozen things that could make the impulse work intermitantly. Worn pawls, broken return spring(s), worn pivot anchors, worn lock post, rusty or rusted impulse spring, etc. Impulse couplers do not take any lubrication like oils. If you want to lube the spring, you could spray dry graphite into the spring. That's the only lube I use in them. Most impulse couplers will pull off with a puller, but the jaws of the puller need to be narrow in order to get inside the housing area and get under the coupler assy. This is done only after the locking tang and nut are removed. I usually use a small adjustable wrench to hold the coupler at one of the Govenor index tangs. At the same time a 3/4" socket on a ratchet should break the nut loose. Be very careful when inspecting or taking the impulse apart! Its under pressure due to the wound spring and it'll bite ya if you're not careful! Steve@B&B
