I am still restoring an Allis B and I need a bit of help setting the valves. I've just torqued the head and the rocker arm assembly down. What position does the crank need to be in to start? Walk me through it if possible. My IT book isn't the greatest and I don't have a service manual. Thanks, Joe

I have the service manual on line at http://geraldj.networkiowa.com/Trees/Allis-Chalmers-G-B-C-CA-Service.pdf" rel="nofollow - http://geraldj.networkiowa.com/Trees/Allis-Chalmers-G-B-C-CA-Service.pdf
Basically you want the piston the cylinder being adjusted at top dead center of the compression stroke. If you can start with #1 at top dead center, then one half turn of the crankshaft will get to the next cylinder in the firing order. Repeat for all four cylinders.
The I&T manual presumes you are an engine expert. Typically it has so little information, it is useless.

mark all the INTAKE valve stems on the top with a black marker... rotate the crank and watch for one intake to go down, then come back up... keep rotating until that piston is at TDC... adjust both valves on that cylinder........ keep repeating.-- any order until all 4 done........... you can look at the timing mark on the crank to get TDC , and you can feel down the sparkplug hole with a thin blade screw driver to feel the piston at top.
------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s.
