Metal Strip Tags on AC Stuff???

I noticed that there is a metal strip tag hanging on the dirt plow I bought today for my G. Believe there are numbers on the strip. Also saw one pictured in the post on Auto Clutch.

What's the story with these tags? Thanks!

I noticed the same thing. I had one of these on my attached one bottom plow for my C. It is actually torn at the mounting hole, so after I restored the plow, I never put it back on. But I always had the intention of making a replacement (or somehow fixing original) to put back on.

I have never found the correct size number stamps to do so though.

I can get the tag number if that means anything to anyone.

Here is a pic of my torn tag:

It was still attached to the the plow by the hog ring still visible on the plow in this photo (on bracket directly under the period on plow stencil. I was making a stencil from the original factory lettering in photo). I removed the tag while restoring the plow.

They are bundle numbers. When you bought a piece of equipment, that had different configurations, the common parts would go in a bundle, and the unique parts in another bundle. The customer was shipped the different bundle numbers to make up the particular piece ordered. That helped keep costs down, as the diversity came in the form of smaller bundles, so not as much stock was tied up in being able to sell as many variations as possible.

Most Setup books have a matrix of the bundle numbers required to make up a particular model of that piece of equip. Cultivators are one type of equip that this is pretty obvious, plows were also.

Glenn, that's interesting stuff! Thanks for the explanation. Also interesting that some of those tags were left on equipment after it was assembled.......and survived to this day.

Sometimes a dealer put number tags on used equipment that he took in.
