main thing is go through truck top to bottom, no guns, no ammo, nothing viewed as a weapon, they are not playing at their border, believe you will also need your purchase paperwork for what you buy

Do not have a beard. You may be profiled. Many truckers who I sold tires to told me this. They said "If you have a beard they will pull you over at the border stop and everything will come out of the truck." Some of them claimed to be there for hours. Good luck, have fun.

What you say is the same as I have heard.   I pays to be clean cut and professional looking.

Yep,,,the northern border is far different from the southern border,,,,We went across at the Peace gardens and you DO NOT want to act "cute" cause them Canadian Immigrations mean business,,,,they asked us where,,,,for how long,,,when coming back and they meant business!!!! AND,,,coming back was just as bad on the US side,,,almost like they was competing on which one could be the nastiest,,,,,but truth be known,,,I did not mind in the least,,,at least I KNEW they was on the job,,,,ClapClap

Looking forward to meeting you at George's sale. Will camping in a fifth wheel onsite and helping George with some things. Canadian customs guys are reasonable. Turn off radio, cell phone, take off sun glasses and look straight at them when you answer their questions. If your truck is a diesel, they like if you shut it off while talking. Absolutely NO fire arms! Everything you do or buy is personal. Now US Customs is another story. They eat raw meat every morning. No duty on anything original built in the US. When you go home with your new toys, do not use the truck lanes when you are at US customs. Go with the RV's and declare your purchases as personal.

I've brought a couple tractors across at Sarnia.  The second one was a D12.  I had 3 customs guys up on the trailer checking it out.  Not for contraband, because they really liked it!  The guy in the booth asked what I paid for it, just out of interest.  I grabbed the hand written Bill of Sale and told him.   He was impressed.

I've had a beard all my life and have never been stopped on either side.

Be respectful of the guard.  Answer his questions with short concise answers.  No jokes, and don't be nervous.

Disconnect your radar detector if you have one, or they will take it away...

re: radar detector.
They are 100% illegal and ANY cop can take it from you, plugged in or not,If he sees it HE can confiscate it. So,, put your hat or map over it....

Be careful at the auction ! 'buyer's premiums' and 'loading fees' jack up the prices and I don't know HOW they handle the 13% TAXES ! I KNOW when I buy stuff in the USA I get dinged the 13%, though 20 years ago I never did...sigh...

Oh yeah ,the 100 KMH speed signs mean 60 ... SIXTY MILE PER HOUR !!!

edit: OK just HOW did one guy acquire all them orange ????

if you spend over $2500 dollars you MUST have a broker for crossing the border, a fellow forum member on here came up and bought a tractor from me and ran into this problem. Was stuck at the border for several hours filling out paper work!

You could have gotten by with just a passport card, they are cheaper than the PP. I have both as I used to live in Ontario when married to a Canadian and I commuted for my overseas consultancy. I use the PP card anymore so I don't have to carry the PP when visiting my son and daughter.
Do not pull up behind the vehicle at the booth until the light changes after the previous person has exited the booth stop. They will ask you "can you read" as they did me once when I inched too close while getting my license, PP out of my pocket while pulling up.
No jokes, no tobacco, no booze (unless bought at Duty Free just prior to border crossing), and NO GUNS. Thousand Islands Bridge crossing north of Watertown, NY can get busy and I have sat in line for over an hour before when busy. Give yourself time as weekends can get swamped as locals return from US trips plus many Americans are going across for visits. Many boats and campers this time of year. You should still be able to use the truck lane if pulling a trailer. Obey the speed limits just prior to the border, especially as you come back across as Troopers grab plenty where it stays 45-55 mph for a few miles on our side and that ticket is expensive (ask me how I know). I have only went across in Buffalo once and they are very thorough there as well.
As mentioned, if you have a radar detector, put it in the console and never plug it in while there as OPP have equipment to pick up the signal if you use it, and they do confiscate it. Knew an OPP officer while I lived there in the later 90's and he advised locals would plug in a cheap detector after removing their good one while pulled over. OPP had equipment to pick up different frequencies and would simply tell the driver they wanted the other unit also, and you do not get them back.
Taxes (partially) are given back at border so save your receipts for any meals/shopping and pull into the DF for your refund as you come back across.
Don't forget to fill up before crossing as fuel can be very expensive in Ontario. Even compared to NY gas prices as I just returned from NY and paid up to 2.65/gallon while there. Second the comments on cleaning out the truck as they are very keen, even when the border is busy. I was directed to the secondary check area last year, waited over an hour to be interviewed and then watched through the window as they removed everything from the rental car and emptied my luggage, even checked under the hood.
Never trailered equipment back but have been told if documentation is in order, border is no problem.
Enjoy the trip and watch the speedo, especially on the 401 highway if you use it.

What kind of tractor did he buy from YOU ?
I heard as long as tractor or machinery was originally manufactured in USA no tax or tarrifs apply.
How can I contact a broker or official to confirm if I need roker services ?

All these comments about "no guns".  Seems logical enough.  But how do all these guys do it for hunting trips?

The one thing not covered yet is any farm equipment is suspect by the USDA for pathogens. Never even attempt to bring any thing with any dirt, mud, manure . And this includes truck and trailer.

I think its basically common sense...Dont be a rectal opening...I can tell you for sure that the Canadian Border Services people DO NOT like it much if someone does the "Im an american citizen, I can go wherever I want" thing. Ive seen an american guy question the Canadian guards, asking if they had the authority to detain or search U.S. citizens. That was several years ago, I bet that guy is still at the border in secondary...Contact the crossing you plan to use and ask, I bet they will give you all the details you need. Trev.

I never had a problem getting into Canada. Coming back to the U.S. was more of a pain. Canadians customs people were friendly. U.S. customs needed a few lessons in customer service. This was before 9/11, mind you.

Came back across out west somewhere near Spokane I believe.  US Border patrol told me both hands on the wheel, look forward at all times as they went through my luggage.  I was polite, kind, answered every question including "No" to the question of "Are you transporting any produce".  They then immediately sent me to Secondary for falsely answering their questions......I had an orange sitting in the seat next to me that I intended for lunch....which, ironically, I had bought in Seattle on my way into Canada!
I'd definitely think through everything you're taking up, everything you're bringing back and then call both US and Canadian sides to ensure you're good.
My experience is definitely US is harder than the Canadians.

I was talking to Mecum's tractor mechanic at a show a couple weeks ago and he said that if something didn't bring enough in Canada at Nesbit's auction then Mecum was going to haul them back to Iowa to sell.  Think I'll wait until they get closer to me.

Show a hunting license and reservations and you will be allowed to bring a hunting rifle into Canada. A rifle, not a hand gun. Also, no ammunition. You must purchase that in Canada.

We Canadians have a sales tax called HST. It is a value added tax of 13% in Ontario. In business we pay the tax on inputs and charge it on sales and submit the difference. We claim the tax on things we consume in our own business including all equipment, pickups etc.  In the end it is a consumer tax. Actually works very well if you are in business. There things that are '0' rated such as tractors over 50 hp so we don't pay tax on tractors over 50 hp at the point of sale. If Americans pay HST tax in Canada for any purchases, you can fill out a form to have the tax refunded when you cross the border returning home but you must show all your receipts.

That sounds similar to how it worked when I was stationed in London during Desert Storm. Only they had a 200 pound (as in currency) purchase minimum and it had to be submitted within a short period of time. I could never claim my refund because Uncle kept me overseas too long.
