Can anyone tell me a lil more on this planter? Some of these have tapered seed cans.....smaller on bottom than top. Am i to assume this is pin hitch....prob for a ca or wd? How many different seed plates could these have come with? Mainly just corn and beans?
Thanks!

Don't know about the seed cans being tapered. I know some have tapered fertilizer and some newer had fiberglass fertilizer

This guy has a pile of seed plates...could they all be for this planter? Is that possible?

If those seed plates are all for this 2 row id imagine that its pretty tough to find that many for it....or arent they to tough to come accross?

Says there is 15 to 20 plates but doesnt know much about it and is unsure if they are all for it.

I planted many an acre with that exact planter on a WD. Father bought it new in 1950, the drawbar fits into the plates with the hole in and the front bolt is taken out to mount and then put back in between the top and bottom drawbar peices. You let the drawbar swing and remove the two pins in the bail so it can be lifted up and let down. Don't know the model number and made a four row with another planter and a toolbar years latter.

Those are all AC plates and you can get plastic inserts to also use JD plates.

You need different size plate for different size seed or different crops depending on what he wants for them they might be a good deal on epay there 10-20$ a set I've seen both used on back for fertilizer but tapered cone seems to be more common

Agree with Nick, different size seed needs plates to match the seed size.
Looks like corn and bean plates are all there for that planter.
I vaguely recall dad planting milo (maize) with this type of planter but I'm not seeing plates for that.

Thanks for all the great responses guys! You say all of the Corn and bean plates are there for that planter.... excuse my ignorance but shouldn't there be one size plate for beans and one size plate for corn and there is only two rows so why so many plates??

Also could a person put that planter on a CA?

It will go on a pin hitch ca all corn seed is not the same size there is also round and flat corn sometimes it says round or flat on bottom of seed plate there are different size plates to match seed size and to maintain planter accuracy id suggest getting a Manuel it explains a lot about these old planters

Good thought on the manual.

Well i told the guy id take it. I may have paid to much for it. 500.00. I would love to completely restore it this winter. He said zero rust in the cans...any dark spots on it are from it being oiled up and then a lil dirt on top. I will post a progressive post w pics when i start on it this winter. Should be fun:)

Seed corn comes in many different sizes.  Also, flats and rounds.  I'm sure my dad has at least 10 different sets of plates for this planter along with a set of soybean plates.  (The soybean plates don't measure individual seeds..just several at once).  We always used JD plastic plates with the adapter inserts.  The planter was $40 at the auction where my dad bought it.

That is the planter I sold.  Worked fine.  See if you can get a manual.  They will have a better explanation of the plates and various settings.
AC used that planter for years till it came out with the All Crop Planter then moved to the no till.
As stated above the four row planter was two of the same planter with a tool bar for mounting.
Can't believe how good a shape it is.  Usually the fertilizer tins and even sometimes the seed cans are rusted through along with other rust on the entire unit.  I am really surprised at the excellent shape of the planter.
I do not know the price but for that good shape, to me, $ 500 does not seem like too much.
Good Luck!

Some seed corn companies put the plate number on the seed corn bags

They have numbers cast into the bottom of plate a set is typically two for a two row

Here are examples of common sizes of John Deere plastic plates for corn.  Seed corn bags will usually suggest which plates to use for IH and Deere planters.  Don't usually have Allis plate numbers.  Can use the Deere plates in AC planters with adapter.  Also notice that each plate is different color for quick ID.

Not mine.  Just found on internet.  My dad has more than this though.
Here is the adapter to use JD plates on AC planter.   Is useful because you can find JD plates anywhere and the corn is marked for the JD plates as well.

Usually bean plates have way more seed sells to get up to the population you want. Corn ones also can be different seed sell count, usually 16 or 24 to give more population options.

That looks like the wd drawbar hitch, not pin hitch.  You take the drawbar bail off, and insert the DB, under that front bolt, then put a regular DB pin in at the back hole.  As for the plates, it has been covered pretty well. each seed population, and each size of seed means a different plate.  Multiply that by years of farming, using seed of different manufacturers, can yield quite a large collection of plates...

That makes perfect since. I can visualize that mounting on the drawbar when I look at the hitch on the planter.

I used one just like it on a WD - pre Snap Coupler. We planted corn and beans. The boots, tubes or whatever you call them were terribly hard to find back in the 60s. I can imagine now.

Wow a hundred plates. Thats crazy.
So id imagine this planter was from the early 50s....what did they use for wheat then? Did the All Crop Drills go back that far?
Also....could someone explain to me what a Lister Planter was?

I have at least 100 AC plates, plus a couple of the plates that had all different slots to match up the various seeds and a couple blank plates to grind your own seed slots.
