B/C Timing Mark on Flywheel?

We got the neighbor's B running again last night after he had tp replace the mag. Timed it but sure did not see any mark on the flywheel and I almost went blind tryin.... but I never saw one ever so I am not sure what to look for? What should be on a 38/39 B.

I never bothered with the mark,.

Thumb over the #1 spark plug hole to feel compression, bent wire to tell when you are at the top. Put the mag on, and set the number 1 wire to the cap that the rotor is at. 1 2 4 3 from there, she should run, twist the mag to get it dialed in closer after she starts.

Glenn, Till I learned about timing marks on this site I never knew they existed. I frankly, never timed an AC unit except by your method

Seemed to work fine then.

Ok you machine shop guys.. They used to make a gizmo that screwed into the spark plug hole and would indicate TDC. Replaces Glenn's bent wire. If you made one with a whistle, it would tell you where the compression stroke was also. Walmart could get the Chinese to make them for a dollar a piece.

Yes we got it timed okay. Done a few before. The question is about the mark.....just wonderin is/was there a mark, stamped, painted, none or worn off on the 38/39 B? Can't find a reference.

My 38 has one. Your flywheel needs to be clean to find it. It is a groove marked on the edged of the flywheel. I'll try to take a pic and post it later if someone doesn't do it by then.

i have stuck a sandpaper dowel in the hole and had someone hand crank the motor over 2-3 revolutions to clean it off. EVery flywheel i have seen had a mark. You should have a mark 1/2 inch wide across the flywheel that says TDC on the top if the mark, and 30 degrees before that you wull have a flat wide mark that says FIRE on the top if that. YOu take out plugs as Glen said, and bar it over with thumb on the hole as he says. Once it starts to come up on compression, i crank the motor (hand) slow and look into the flywheel hole to see the mark. The mag should "snap" when the crank gets to TDC. You can then move mag in or out a little and try again. When you hear the "snap" look in the hole for TDC.... after running, the mag will advance to 30 degrees if you use a timing light.
