Was told that I should use 20-30 non-detergent oil for the hydraulic fluid. Is that still correct? Could I use the universal hydraulic fluid? If so, could I add it tot he fluid already in the tractor to bring the level up even if it had the non-detergent oil in it? Thanks, Dave

Drain and replace with good universal hy tram that meets Allis 821 power fluid spec but if you don't want to drain and replace non detergent 30 will work but the hytran is better oil for your tractor

Lot of guys use generic 303. Lot of guys beat those guys over the head with "the book calls for..." I ran 303 when I changed mine.

I would use a universal hydraulic fluid....the specs are prolly way more than what was recommended in the late '40's an 50's

works good in my WD's-WD45's

Does it hurt to add the universal hydraulic fluid to non-detergent 30 wt already in the tractor?

Drain the old and put in the universal hy tran.
Not a lot of capacity only about a 1 1/2 gallon.

It very well can, if the system hasn't been drained and cleaned for a 1/4 century. Condensation is about the worst enemy here. Water can build up over time. For a few dollars more, you can be sure all is clean and dry.

Ahead and up from the PTO box and a second smaller drain plug on the bottom of the pump body itself.

Ok, I think I see the one in front of the PTO box - has a 9/16" square head. Is the one on the pump clear at the bottom of it with the 3/8" square head? I'm trying to work on Dad's WD, he passed away a few years ago and we just don't know what he was using for fluid and more fluid appears to need to be added as the rams aren't lifting up. Tkx, Dave

Pump plug is quite small compared to the other plug.

If the pump plug is original it will have a magnet on it.  That was originally put there to catch any metal that may have worked it's way into the hyd area.
You know, once we drained the Hyd oil and guess what?  There was a small metal screw top on the magnet.  Apparently it had fallen in when filling the plug and caught on the magnet.
Yes, we used SAE 20 NON DETERGENT oil in the hyd area and it worked fine.  That said, the reports are GREAT on the hyd-trans oils.  Now State of the Art.
Good Luck!
Bill Long

ps:  I would not mix the oils.  May well be all right but why take the chance.

I used generic hydro trans in my wd45, I was running a loader off the tractors hydro. changed it yearly. never had an issue.
