Rebuilt engine with new mains and rod brgs. gaskets and seals. Frt seal is leaking, looks like seal is not centered on shaft. I have tried loosing bolts on timing cover and shift cover to line up seal, helped some. Any one else run into this? any suggestions? It's the smaller seal in gasket kit for early sn.

What kind of seal are you using? If you used some kind of cork seal, those don't seem to seal, they just slow the leaks. Lol
When I rebuilt my 1942 B, I used the modern rubber lip seal for the newer engines. Flying by the seat of my pants (as I had no idea what to do or expect) I used a dremel to enlarge the hole in the timing cover so it would fit, then I put black gasket maker around the outside of the seal in case my new hole wasn't perfectly round. My crank has the spiral groove in it, so to get around that I filled the grooves in with JB Weld (Yes, very prufesh'nul). After it dried I took a file and filed it down. I slid the timing cover over the shaft, then bolted it down. It centered itself pretty well, but I don't think I could get it 100% spot on. This worried me a bit, but that was in July, and it still isn't leaking any.

The lip seals on the front cover are real easy to tear when installing. I made a funnel shaped sleeve from shim stock to go over the step on the crankshaft. I am thinking you could use masking tape ahead of the step to keep it from tearing. I never tried it though.
I have never had a problem with that seal when I didn't ruin it, then by eye balling it to center after the cover was over the studs and the bolts were started.  Any seal leaks I have had after a rebuild, when examined on removal, was caused by myself on installation.
