What causes the loud whine/groan in intermediate 3rd and 4th gear? Its always been this way even after full tranny service?  Just a bad design flaw?  I've added sound proof and absorbing materials in the cab, but only helped slightly.

Had a 6080 did the same thing, very annoying. Had a friend who got rid of his because he could not stand the noise.

Mine does it also, sounds like it must be normal to me.

It is the small gears in planetary when in intermediate.  Normal.          MACK

also while talking about 6080 gears, when working with my 6080 in most cases it seams like intermediate 4th is to slow and hi 1st is to fast, does anyone else have this problem ?

yes. We did not like the transmission set-up in the 6080 at all for row crop work. I always felt it was set up more as a utility tractor with that FIAT rear half. I know a lot of guys say they get along great with it, but for us it just did not fit well with what we using it for. Bought a late model 185 to replace it and enjoy it a lot more.

Yeah, it seems I use about 4 gears out of 12 on mine...not the best design. I'll take 4 with a power director any day...

Each to their own I'll take a little whine anyday over holding a tractor in gear.

We got 2 6080's both 8000 plus hours one whines much worse than the other. Doubt theirs a connection but higher SN tractor is better.

My FW has 20 speeds and I use exactly 2 plus only one of the reverses.   Don't care if a tractor has 3 gears or 24 if the gears you got are spaced right.

Never have to hold any of mine in gear. X2 on the four with power director.
