On a recent trip to Jamaica I took this picture as I was getting off the shuttle. This is just one of many poles.
I know we have better codes.
I thought some of the electricians on here might be interested.

| Nothing too hard there. Looks like a open delta bank with a secondary side that is a little messy. Needs a little slack cut out of it. Sad thing is I have worked on worse. Amazing that the power stays on here at all. Nice concrete pole though. It will be there for a while. Thanks for the pics, Now I will be seeing that in my sleep tonite LOL. Especially when I usually forget about work at 3 o'clock everyday even though I get off at 3:30 |

| Yes it is definitely an A-C tranformer. AC alternating current. ( Sorry about that I couldn't resist) Would be much better of if they were genuine Allis transformers. Those things hang in there for years. I work on Allis equipment daily. Lots of it has been in service since the 40's or 50's. I think that may be the best part of my job, working with the Allis stuff. |

The biggest D.C. Transformer I know of would be located at the White House LOL.(Not a good thing) That subject would be for another section of the forum. I am worked up enough over that, going back to talking ALLIS. :>) |

The last transformer I helped put in weighted over 30,000 lbs. and there were 2 of them. And we had to lift them and put them on a deck under another deck. These decks were like shelfs at the end of a crane bay. Dusty ------------- 917 H, '48 G, '65 D-10 series III "Allis Express" |

| I know the feeling Dusty. I see engineering at it's finest. We have put transformers in places were they will never be seen by the human eye again. Just hoping I don't get the call to change them one day. Well if it is a piece of ALLIS equipment I would certainly be a little more enthusiastic about the work! :>) |

Hey, that ain't so bad, i've seen MUCH worse outside a granite plant in Elberton. Trans bank was sitting inside a chainlink fence on a granite picnic table! There was also no main disconnect inside the building. Had to pull the barrels with a takeout stick to cut everything off. Worked for years, until the quadraplex chafed where it was tied to the building trusses with #10 solid wire. We got there after the fact, but the guys in there said it was a great fireworks show for a while! Glad noone was under it after it burned the truss chord into and finally all three phases went. After a nice, 16 hour day with 4 of us working non-stop, and the local utilities doing their part, we got things in a little better shape. New pole-mounted transformers(old ones smoked). New 400 amp entrance. New 400 amp main fused disconnect. New tandem 200 load centers. Came back next day to get all equipment wired back in, phased, and running.
What I don't understand about the pic is, why did they just keep adding Kearneys to the secondary? How much longer would it have taken to squeeze one on ABOVE the last one and cut the old crap off?

I believe Jamaica lays in hurricane alley? Concrete post should hold up good to storm winds. I bet the hurricanes blow wires off or loose, then someone just goes to hooking them back up. Tough conditions. |
