Can anybody explain to me what a "breaker" plow is and how it differs from any other plow?  I've been searching for a mounted plow for my Allis C for some time now with no luck, but I see postings on craigslist for single bottom breaker plows fairly frequently and I'm wondering if I could use one of these behind my C or will it pull too hard?  I also see a large number of postings for 2 bottom trip plows, but I'm thinking that these also may be too much for a C?

Thanks!

Butch Ohio is the resident plow expert on this forum but let's see if I can be of any assistance.
A Breaker is a spring loaded hitch on a pull plow that will "break away" in case the plow hits a hard obstruction.
I would not suggest a two bottom plow the C.  A single bottom plow should be easily pulled providing the tractor has fluid in the tires or good weights.  YOu could try without weights or fluid and it may work.
Good Luck!

in central missouri where I grew up a breaking plow was what we called a moldboard plow as opposed to a disc plow or a slat moldboard plow or a chisel plow. didn't know about breaker plow.

I remember seeing single bottom moldboard plow that was maybe 24". My dad referred it as a breaking plow because they were used for plowing land that had not been plowed before or a long time.

I think you are all correct. I heard it all different ways. Fred

Dusty's recollection is the same as what we in Mn call a breaking plow. Usually a large (20-30") and heavy single bottom plow mounted on trip wheel frame. Generally comes with a very large coulter or a knife blade. They are used to plow land that is heavily sodded and/or has standing brush, such as willow. They dig in 10-15" deep, cut the roots off (well, most of the time) and rolls the brush into the furrow. I converted a 22" breaking plow with a 30" coulter from a trip plow (the trip mechanism was shot and the plow was free) to an Allis snap couple hitch, using the front of a parts plow. I pull it behind my D17D. Sure does a good job turning heavy sod and/or brush over.
