My favorite tractor is the WD45.  However, there is one thing about them that gives me heartburn.  I just got a nice 45 that had a bad left brake.  Fortunately, the right one could be adjusted.  So, I got out my nice tool specially made for removing the hardened pin.  Sure enough, it pulls the end right off the pin without even moving it.  Now I have no choice but to use the torch to cut a little at a time out of the center of the pin using the vent hole in the bottom of the differential.  What a nasty job but luckily the inside of the pin broke loose easily so I could get it out first.  I have had this experience to often after these get rusted.  I'm not forgiving the person that designed the hardened pin.  Thanks for letting me vent a little.  I feel better now and will even be better after I get a shower to get all the black stuff off  to my face.

My uncle told me to keep a can of penetrating oil handy at all times and whenever you walked by a WD or WD45 to hit those two brake pins with oil; then when you wanted to do the brake job they would come out. Mine get shots of oil.

Would like to visit with you, but I hope this is the last one I ever do.  On further thought, my D17 needs some replaced.  Ugh!

Those pins are a bugger. I am on number five revised pin puller and second generation brake drum puller.  Have been lucky only two pins had to be cut out.  It does help when the tractor is upside down.

I'm no expert, and I've never been around a WD/WD45/D17 brake system, but how hard would it be to tap the pin, thread a bolt into it, and pull the pin that way? I know it's hardened, so that may rule that option out.

My puller applies a lot of pressure.  Maybe others have done it but I don't think you could drill into that hardened pin to tap it.

The original pins aren't hardened, I was able to sit under mine and drill it with a hand drill then tap it and put the puller on it again.  The puller did it after that, here is a picture of the puller with a bolt screwed into the pin.  I remember the puller put a deep impression of the bolt head into the washer.

I weld a shortened slide hammer onto mine and start banging..... works but makes one's hands and arms hurt after a few minutes.

where do you purchase one of these pullers, I have several tractors that it may come in handy some day!!

I did a brake job on my narrow front 45 last fall. I did like Michael said and strayed the pins with 'deep-creep' when ever I thought about it for over a year. My home made puller pulled them right out. It was not a fun job but is really nice to have a left brake (and a right).

Tom, you have a good idea.  I guess that I had just assumed these pins are hardened as I can never get anything to grip them like a regular bolt.  I'll try your approach next time I pull the end off the pin with my puller that is identical to yours.  Thanks.

If the pins are case hardened once you get through the case they would tap easily.

I just checked one I have out of the tractor with a file, they are definitely hard.

I suppose then maybe after the end was pulled off the softer material is what I drilled into, I do know it worked.  Here is a link to where the puller can be obtained:

if you have access to a plasma cutter,that works lot better than a cutting torch.not near the heat in a confined area.used mine several times on those brake pins.....
