D17 III gas.

The tach cable has a square cross section. In the distributor, there is a round opening and a round receptacle for the tach cable. There is a 1/16" slot for in the receptacle for the tach cable. Does a round or rectangular woodruff key go in this slot to hold the cable? If so, what is the orientation and size of the round woodruff key?

I put a new tach and cable on my tractor. It worked intermittantly at first, now it doesn't work at all. The cable at the tach end does not spin when the engine runs. The actual cable itself is not fitting up tight within the distributor. I've got a little woodruff key in the dist to hold the cable. It's oriented with the round part next to the cable, and the flat part away. The cable caps do screw on firmly to the tach and dist.

There is a little adaptor that converts the square end to a round-with-a-slot male. I just bought one last winter to get my S1 tach to work. It's made of plastic and I noticed the other day the tach has quit working again, doesn't turn at the tach end so I am thinking the plastic adapter thingy has given up. I'm not sure if the originals had a different end on the tach cable - I have heard a cable is available with the round/tab end but haven't seen one.

Thanks Creek. I read alot of your old posts when I rebuilt the engine on my D17 and it helped me out, since we basically had the same problems.

my tach cables have the keyed end an does not need the adaptor 1-800-254-3116

stock adaptor also for you guys
