Boy is going to wind up buying a plow for his C. Found a single bottom 14" trip for sale cloae to home. What would have been the original tires on one? I assume the furrow tire would have been an implement tire. What did they use for the lift side rubber? A 5.00-16 bar tire is well over $100. Starting to think this plow is going to get some cheap used tires and maybe a good truck tire chain on the lift wheel. AaronSEIA |

In the plow frames parts book, tires tend to be listed as "Not serviced, obtain locally." Like for the rear gauge wheel for a 70 or 80 two way plow. Rims could be had in 14 or 15". For the rear wheel of a 70 and 80 wheel type plow they specify 5.70.5.00 x 8 , not serviced obtain locally. For the furrow axle on that plow frame they say its a 15" tire, not serviced obtain locally. One or two other rear wheels take a 4 x 9 tire. Other than those small tires all the other tires have the same lack of information, no rim widths, no tire sizes, and many have options of 13, 14, or 15" rims, some only 14" rims, others only 15". The pictures show a multi ribbed implement tire, nothing for traction and ribs so small they are poor for steering tires. Most any car tire that fits the rim should work and probably not wildly different from the original, probably supplied by the implement dealer from a local tire dealer, not from the Allis factory. On the farm, most likely a retired car or pickup tire. Measure the rim and find a handy tire that will work with that rim and go. About 1950 my dad built a garden tractor out of a model A Ford drive train with shortened axles and housings. The car tires he put on it then are still on it and he kept tire chains on it most of the time whether for mowing or plowing and they are still on it. I need to get it running again. He dropped the front spindles and used rubber tired wheel barrow wheels for the front wheels. Gerald J. |

Parts book for the #1 plow lists the tire as 5.00*16 obtain locally. Wish it had 15" rims, traction tires are a lot easier to find in 15". AaronSEIA |

I've seen an awful lot of old snow tires mounted on trip plows. Might be easier to find a 15" wheel that will bolt up, but then you have to find a real snow tire. Robert

The clutch side drive tire should be a traction- type. Furrow wheel can be an implement tread. If you're going with auto/light truck tires, try to get an aggressive mud/snow tire on the clutch side. I have seen tire chains used also for added traction.

Any ole tire will lift a single bottom unless it is too wet to plow anyway. Our #1 on steel didnt even have lugs and lifted fine. The 2 bottoms are a bit more finicky and anything over 2 requires some traction. Also helps to have the lift assist springs adjusted up so they are actually assisting (and damn few are). Ted Buisker has a 2 bottom on rubber that has three rib tractor fronts on it and it lifted just fine at the summer shows where I saw it working. |

| Like Butch says almost any tire will lift the plow unless its too wet to plow....I have seen nearly bald tires get the job done..My 3 bottom IH #8 plow has a used $15 implement tread that does just fine..50 years ago I plowed with a B JD pulling a 2x14 IH plow that had a bald mud grip that worked OK.. |

The tires on my single 14" Allis plow
like in the picture worked fine. The heavy duty
two bottom Oliver plows we had from the 1950's needed car snow tires to lift in corn stocks but needed tire chains added in sod. I never pulled the Oliver lighter rooster comb lift plows to know how hard they lifted. All plows are not the same in a lot of ways.  |

It's a shame that you cannot get a mounted C plow. I know they are a pain to mount but I have to say to plow they are real good. Especially if you have hydraulics. In fact, this past May at our Plow Day, I was honored to operate David Dickmyer's 1941 C with a mounted plow. What a delight. Worked so well. If you can find a mounted plow I would vote for that. They lift like a dream, even in sod! I have a regular implement tire on the lift wheel, and have never had a problem.

My folks think I'm a few bricks shy of a full load for wanting that kind of stuff! As a kid, that was always the things on my Christmas list, and "Super 100" was always the first thing on it! Usually followed by other farm equipment related things. Mom would always say, "Why don't you want something I can easily get at the store????" Lol!

There is a complete mounted one a couple hours from me on Craigslist and a member here has one a few more hours away. When doing things on a penny pinching budget, you have to go for the $125 trip plow that is 10 miles from home (and still AC) vs the $200 plus plow a few hours away. We are taking donations though... The tire I am looking at in the picture looks like the same wheel on my moline 2 bottom plow. HOW did you get that wheel off? Is that hub a left hand thread or a right hand thread? I am getting redy to cut a groove to loosen it up. Thanks Doug

I pulled an IH 2 bottom plow on rubber with the WC back in the 60's - 70's. It had regular car tires and we never had a problem with it lifting out. If I were you, I would pick up a scrap tire of the correct size and try it before investing in a traction tire or chains. ------------- D14, D17, 5020, 612H, CASE 446 |
