Got tired of the gasoline run welder in the barn, hard to work with it when I am indoors and it setting outside or being out in the weather with it unless emergency so six months ago started on the road to get a decent 240v stick welder. Gave up on the well used up buzz boxes and the worn to a frazzle heavier commercial units also all but used up and got this. A Miller CST 280, even has TIG rating as it is a inverter style welder. 120amps 100% duty cycle on 240v, if could get three phase that goes up to 160 amps. full capacity 60% duty is 200amps 240v. Uses same leads connections as my old welder generator so just swap machine to machine. The one under it is my Miller 210 wire feed, does alright on lighter gauge and up to 3/16 steel or 1/4" aluminum but not for the welding I generally do with stick 7018. Little guy weighs in at 41 pounds, less than half that of the old buzz boxes.

them inverter welders seem to be the best thing in welders - I bought my Pow-Con 20 years back and with the 3 modes it works great - but the TIG is scratch start and hard on tungstens - being able to wire feed or stick weld by flipping a switch and changing one lead to stinger - makes it easy for welding many things - and made up DIN cord so can take wire feed unit up to 20 ft from power supply - great for welding in hard to get to places when using wire feed . I also have my Miller 304 with all the bells and whistles - well lacking the spool gun - but has the water cooled TIG torch and high frequency start. Son has 3 Thermal-Arc machines - believe they are updates of the Pow-Con as they were bought out by Thermal-Arc or Miller. Still have a Miller 180 Amp that i put a full-wave bridge on for DC welding, bought that welder back about 1966 or so and still works but have not used it in quite a few years now .

Dave - I thought I was doing good picking up a mint Miller Thunderbolt xl 225/150 ac/dc with 30 foot leads and pile of 6010/7018 rods and a homemade cart for $350. I need to get my portable generator running again so I can do mobile welding too. Have some steel fence post braces I'll need to do soon. Howdy, Nothing wrong with the Thunderbolt series, will hobby weld about anything. I just needed a more serious long duration welder when I get down to the rest of my projects!! |
